Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Windows 7 + 3.0.7 + Nvidia 190.38 not working
Adriano   2009-08-01 13:09
Hi.

I've been using ultramon on windows vista for a long time without any problems.

Today I upgraded to Windows 7 RTM version 7600 and Ultramon doesn't work.

I have my main monitor and an LCD tv. I use ultramon to switch from monitor to TV and back (I never use both at same time). I created both profiles (TV and Monitor)and the 1st time I use it it takes forever to switch and when it does switch the aero theme is turned off. From this point on when I try to switch again it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Any help greatly apreciated.

ps. I know how to create profiles as I've been a ultramon user for months already on windows vista.

Interesting I have the same setup and no issues at all.

What happens if you change display settings manually via UltraMon menu > Display Settings?

When I do it manually (using display settings) it works perfectly. The problem is when I try using profiles.

Forgot to mention I'm using x64 version of Windows 7.

Make sure the display profiles are still valid for your current display configuration, for example if monitor numbers changed since you created the profiles you might get odd behavior because the profiles will apply the settings to the wrong monitor.

Hi again. Sorry for the late reply. I was busy with other things and couldn't do some tests.

Today I noticed something weird and I think this could be the reason for the problem. Ultramon detects monitor 1 and 2 and windows detects monitor 2 and 1. It's inverted.

How can I change it so that windows and ultramon detect monitor 1 and 2 correctly ?

here is the screencap to show it

Please run EnumDisp and send me the generated log file to support@realtimesoft.com.

I have the same issue with the same configuration (x64 WIndows 7 RTM and 190.38 nVidia). I have sent in my enumdisp.txt
Adriano   2009-08-11 15:07
Ok. I just sent you the requested file. Hope you can figure out what's causing this issue.

I am having the same issue with the same Nvidia driver, but the x86 (32-bit) version of Windows 7. Specifically, this problem started happening after I adjusted the visible display resolution for my second display, which is a Sony RPTV that has a noticeable overscan. I reduced the resolution using the Nvidia control panel so that it now is 1832 x 1036 (instead of 1920 x 1080). After I had done that, the UltraMon profiles stopped working altogether.
Jan   2009-08-12 08:38
P.S.: After I changed the display resolution settings, I of course re-created the UltraMon profiles from scratch. However, this did not help.
Also, I failed to mention that I am also using the final Windows 7 (RTM) version, not the Beta or RC.
Christian Studer   2009-08-12 13:34
Jan, do you also have the problem with Display Properties showing different monitor numbers than UltraMon?

Indeed! Didn't notice it until now, but the Windows 7 "Screen resolution" dialog shows the monitor numbers in reverse, compared to the UlraMon "Display Settings" dialog. This is most obvious when using the "identify monitors" option in both dialogs.

I'm going to look into this for the next release, not sure yet what exactly causes this.

Thanks Christian for looking in to this. If it helps, I also changed the NVidia overscan settings for my Sony LCD TV and began having the problems at about that time - ultramon profiles no longer change the resolution and display numbers different between Windows 7/nVidia control panel and Ultramon. Deleting the displays did not help

I am having exactly the same issue...

Short Version: When applying a profile that BOTH switches the primary monitor AND disconnects the current primary monitor, the profile does nothing. Furthermore once in this state, all profiles no longer work until the monitor is re-enabled in the normal Windows 7 Resolution screen.

------
Details:

I have two monitors on video-card 1 and a 1080 plasma on card 2.

Running Windows 7 (x64 both RC and RTM)...

Generally I setup my profiles to "single monitor" "two-monitors," "plasma only," etc..

The bug existed prior to NVidia 190.xx and in Ultramon 3.0.6 so I do not think NVidia is the problem. In addition, changing somthing in the normal Windows resolution screen resolves the "profile broken" state. Finally, this happens with even two monitors.

Reproduction Steps (I am a Software Engineer ;) ...with simplifications!)

1) Start with a system with two or more monitors on Windows 7. (Let's call it Monitor 1 and Monitor 2)

2) Create a Display Profile A:
Primary: Monitor 1
Extended: Monitor 2

3) Create another Display Profile B:
Primary Monitor 1
[Monitor 2 Disconnected]

--Verify That you can switch between both profiles without trouble.

5) Add another profile:
Primary: Monitor 2
Extended: Monitor 1

--Verify that everything is still peachy

6) Add another profile C:
Primary: Monitor 2
[Monitor 1 Disconnected]

7) Set to Profile B (Monitor 1 Only)

8) Switch to Profile C.

--Verify that NOTHING happens. Furthermore ALL display profiles no longer work.

--Verify that going into "Screen Resolution" and re-enabling monitor 2 puts the system back to normal state.

--Verify that ALL other combination work; I think the key is that Ultramon does not like switching to a primary monitor that is currently disconnected.

I hope this helps. I took the time because I LOVE this app!!!

I apologize; perhaps my post should be in its own thread...I am going to move this post into a new thread. GIven the length of that post and the fact that it *may* be a different issue, I do not want to muddy up the MB.

Thank you!

Hey mikey.

your problem is exactly like mine so don't worry you posted in the right thread (I'm the topic starter) :)

I just noticed this thread and I am having exactly the same issue using the nVidia 186.30 drivers with Windows 7 x64 RC1, build 7100. I have 2 Quadro NVS 290 cards driving 4 LCDs. Windows Control Panel and nVidia Control Panel show the monitors as 1-2-3-4 (which is their actual physical order on my desktop). UltraMon 3.0.7 show the order of displays as 2-1-3-4. Both correctly show monitor 2 as the primary and the order of image display matches what Windows and nVidia say.

It's not causing me any operational issues; it's just strange.

BTW, do any of you other 190.38 drivers users have an issue where the "snap window edges" functionality disappeared from nView Desktop Manager with this driver release?
Dan   2009-08-23 10:07
Sorry - one more piece of info.

Where I have the Ultramon monitor order listed as 2-1-3-4, the upper left corner of display 2 is -1600,0; diaplsy 1 is 0,0; display 3 is 1600,0; and display 4 is 3200,0. This caused me a few issues since I set my financial analysis package to open on the second monitor from the left and span three monitors. I thought it would be 1600,0 instead of the 0,0 that UltraMon uses.
Christian Studer   2009-08-24 09:04
Dan, the coordinates look okay, if #1 is primary it will always be at 0,0, and with #2 to the left of the primary it will have negative coordinates.

If you're looking for a utility that will swap displays on a shortcut key as I was, I was lucky enough to run into a developer over at The Green Button who took it upon himself to write a nice command line app that toggles the primary display from one device to the other. You can view thread and access the download here:

KS,

that utility works well, but only for as long as you don't change the resolution of one of your monitors. Once I adjust the display resolution to a custom one on my RPTV, it doesn't work anymore.
