I have a group of about 6 icons that i arrange in a certain part of the screen. each time the computer is started these icons get moved around, while all the other icons behave.
has this happened to anyone else?, does anyone know why, or how to solve it?

Does restoring icon positions via UltraMon menu > Desktop Icons fix the problem?

Maybe it's related to the Smart Taskbar, under some circumstances icons may get moved up a row when the additional taskbar(s) get added. To test this, try if disabling the Smart Taskbar under UltraMon Options > Smart Taskbar fixes the problem.

Hello to all. I have a simular problem with the desktop icons. I have two monitors and about 60 desktop icons which I want to sit on my second monitor which is not my main primary monitor. UM 3.07 Beta succesfully moves all but about 3 icons to the second monitor after restart. Why does it leave 3 on my primary monitor? One of the icons always includes "Homegroup" (I'm running Windows 7 x86 Ultimate) and the other two will vary. I can move them over manually and they will stay on the second desktop until the next machine restart. Save and restoring the desktop icons in UM does not fix the problem. I have also tried disabling the smart task bar as you suggested above. This did not fix the problem either. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

Do the names of those icons begin with the same letters as other icons? This is an issue on Vista (due to a Vista bug), I don't know yet if this is fixed in Windows 7.

Ditto. I've actually come to this forum solely looking to resolve this niggling problem. My nomadic icons comprise a desktop Adobe folder, a shortcut to Adobe Lightroom (only unstable after installing a new version yesterday) and an app and shortcut to Network Magic, thus dispelling the Vista spelling suggestion.
I'm thinking about chicken sacrifice. Any better ideas?

Did you already check if it's related to the Smart Taskbar?

Ok, I lied. Double-checking the alphabet issue (too coincidental that two "A..." icons and two "N..." icons were traveling, I changed "Adobe Lightroom" to just "Lightroom" as a shortcut name. Voila! Restart; it stuck. BUT then Adobe Media Player joined the team as a traveling "A." Soooo, I changed the Adobe folder to 2Adobe and the Network Magic to 2Network Magic to see if the issue was beginning letter sensitive. It worked. Curiously, now everything is stable, even the remaining "A" and "N" files. Maybe the chicken didn't die in vain...
Vista 64, UM beta 3.07.

I have found that the icons which travel and don't stick are the same for a while and then they change once you have installed new programs and added new icons. Often it's the new icons that travel and then eventually after moving them around and saving the icon positions they will stick. It's nothing to do with the names of the icons themselves. One icon which always travels no matter what I do is the "Homegroup" icon. For some reason Ultramon can't seem to save the position of this icon at all.

What would I need to do to add the Homegroup icon? I don't have this on my Windows 7 test system.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM, so maybe they added the Homegroups to this Release to Manufacture version. To be honest, I can get all the icons messed up in Windows 7 just by changing the screen resolutions on the monitors. Updating or changing the display drivers also totally messes things up. It's not hard to get the icons messed up. I can then manually move them around again and save the positions. Reboot the computer and they will be messed up again on reload but in different orders. It's like ultramon or windows trys to resotre the positions but gets most or some of them wrong some how. Restoring the desktop icon positions manually in Ultramon restores some of the icons but not others. Some remain messed up. It's all very wierd. I don't think the aditional task bars are helping much. They make the problem worse for sure, but disabling them doesn't completely fix the problem either. Eventually, when the system settles down (after a few reboots and resaves of icon positions etc) only a couple of icons will always be consistently wrong on reboot. Homegroup always being one of them. Hope this makes things a tiny bit clearer.
