Forums -> UltraMon™ -> UltraMon Taskbar Crashes when using RDP
Nava Tempelton   2009-10-07 00:08
Hi,

I did a search on the forum and couldn't find any post relating to my issue.

I am using UltraMon 3.0.5 Beta with 2 SAMSUNG 19" LCD Monitors with great success when working locally.
Whenever I use RDP from a remote site to access my machine the UltraMon TaskBar crashes immediately.
Obviously my intention when using RDP to access my machine, is to work only on the primary monitor. I just don't want UltraMon Taskbar to crash because when I get back to my computer it's still gone...

Error details:

UltraMon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit.
More information:
Version: 3.0.5 OS: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 x32 Source File: ./TaskBand.cpp Line: 527 Return value: 0 Last error: 1400

Should I try upgrade to 3.0.7 ? or try something else?

Thanks,
Nava.

Please try if upgrading to 3.0.7 fixes the problem, let me know if you still get an error.

Hi,

Seems to be resolved with the upgrade to 3.0.7

you can add this solution to the "fixed" part in the release notes of 3.0.7

Thank you very much for your time!!

Nava.

Error information:

Does this happen all the time or only occasionally?

If only occasionally, did you notice anything which seems to cause the problem?

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Nava Tempelton   2009-10-14 10:53
Well, it doesn't happen all the time.

I can't think of something special while this happenes..

It usually happenes the second I log on, while the desktop is resizing because of the different resolution of my computer at home.

I always have some open windows on my primary and others on my secondary before I leave work.
TaskBar is not mirrored (each taskbar only shows the applications of it's current monitor)

Nothing else special I could think of...

Please run EnumHooks and post the contents of the generated log file here or mail it to me at support@realtimesoft.com.

I executed the file right after a crash, and second time after a full restart.
Both logs files are identical.

Here is the content of the log file:

Would you be interested in running a test version of UltraMonTaskbar.exe to help troubleshoot this issue further? You would also need to be able to have a debug monitor running, for example DebugView.

The test version would send diagnostic information to the debug monitor, when you get the error the next time you could then send me the output from the debug monitor for analysis.

I would be happy to help with debugging the software.

Since the issue is with my computer at work, I have consulted with our information security team.

They asked me if they can see the information and confirm it before it's being sent to you?

Also, please which debugger would you need me to install?
Christian Studer   2009-10-25 14:00
That's no problem, the output from the debug monitor is a standard text file.

Any debug monitor will work fine, if you don't already have one installed I would recommend DebugView from Microsoft.

I have Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 installed, is it any good or you want me to install DebugView anyway?

Also, what else needs to be done inorder to install the debug version?

What exactly should I do the next time the program crashes?
Christian Studer   2009-10-28 13:04
I'm not aware of a way to capture debug output with Visual Studio (except if you're running an application in the Visual Studio debugger).

I have uploaded the test version of UltraMonTaskbar.exe: umtbar_3.0.7_dbg5_x32.zip. To install it, first create a backup of the original UltraMonTaskbar.exe in C:\Program Files\UltraMon, then close UltraMon and extract the ZIP file to the UltraMon folder to replace the original file with the test version.

Now start your debug monitor, for example DebugView, then start UltraMon via the shortcut in Start Menu > Programs. If the debug monitor is working properly, you'll see a message like 'OnCreate: band = ...' when UltraMon gets started.

When UltraMonTaskbar.exe fails the next time with a fatal error (it'll be on line 573 of TaskBand.cpp), save the output from the debug monitor to a file and send it to me at support@realtimesoft.com for analysis.

Hi,

I closed UltraMon completely, replaced the taskbar debug version with the regular one and installed debugview.

but when I run debugview all I get is the following lines:

[3712] m_nMSBtnAllowedAttempt is -1
[3712] m_nMSBtnAllowedAttempt is -1
[3712] m_nMSBtnAllowedAttempt is -1
[3712] m_nMSBtnAllowedAttempt is -1
[3712] m_nMSBtnAllowedAttempt is -1

When I start ultramon no other lines appear in the debugview window besides the lines above.

I have checked all the options under "Capture" menu - still same lines.
Christian Studer   2009-10-29 10:28
Looks like the debug monitor is working fine, but the message you see is from a different application.

What's the size of UltraMonTaskbar.exe in C:\Program Files\UltraMon?

Nava Tempelton   2009-10-31 09:14
C:\>dir "c:\program files\ultramon\ultramontaskbar.exe"
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is

Directory of c:\program files\ultramon

10/29/2009 02:54 AM 351,232 UltraMonTaskbar.exe
1 File(s) 351,232 bytes

BTW - it didn't crash over a week or so...
Christian Studer   2009-10-31 10:26
File size is okay, you do have the test version installed.

Unfortunately I don't know why you wouldn't get the debug output from UltraMonTaskbar.exe, this works fine for me, I tested with the test version and DebugView 4.76 on 32-bit Windows XP.

I have exactly the same issue as is being reported. I am a software dev by trade, and am happy to help debug it if necessary. Send me an email if you would like me to run the debug version as well.
Christian Studer   2009-11-08 06:59
Stacy, you can run the same test version, umtbar_3.0.7_dbg5_x32, see above for instructions. If you're using 64-bit Windows let me know and I'll upload a 64-bit version.

I have downloaded the DEBUG version, installed it. debugview is also installed and running.

I got the initial messages so it looks like its all go.

I'll paste the logs when it crashes next :)
Stacy   2009-11-09 09:14
quick update: I have been using UltraMon and RDP extensively over the last day - no crashes of UltraMon have occured.

Whatever you did in the debug version, it seems to have worked :)
Stacy   2009-11-25 07:14
No further crashes on my set with the debug version. The crashing that used to be a regular occurrence is now not occurring at all.
Christian Studer   2009-11-25 10:17
Glad to hear that, thanks for the update. I'm not sure though what might have fixed the issue, there was no fix for this specific issue in the test version. If you get this again with the next release (3.0.8) let me know.

Same issue. Also a software developer. Also XP SP3 x86 w/ MSVS2008 installed.

When apps start crashing, I can't even log out normally. I have to force-logout to get it to reboot.

It sometimes crashes as I log in and sometimes a few minutes/hours later. Sometimes I logged in initially via RDP, and sometimes I logged in initially at the desktop then connected subsequently to the console session via RDP. Sometimes I am RDPed when it crashes, and sometimes I am at console.

I don't think it has crashed when I have been only at the console since the last reboot.

It crashes so often that I have had to disable it to be able to work normally. A fix or refund is needed...
Christian Studer   2010-06-05 12:39
Thomas, what's the error message you get, and which version of UltraMon are you using?
