Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Video play back problems in mirror mode only?
Gary O   2009-12-09 12:00
I am running XP with a P4 2.6, 1gig RAM and (2)Jaton Video-228PCI-Twins with 128mb's apiece in a 4 monitor setup.

All video play is fine, DVD, streaming, until I switch to mirror mode. (which is why I did all this)

Mirror mode is working well and clear on all monitors, however as soon as I switch from 1 mon. to 4 mons. I get a large video stagger (frame drop)on all monitors.
I tried: Media Player ver.11, Power DVD ver.7 and VLC video player.
Also have enabled/disabled acceleration and over lays. Always the same result....
NO CHANGE?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

How's CPU usage when this happens? You can see this via Task Manager, on the Performance tab. Most likely UltraMon just can't keep up when you're using 3 mirror targets instead of only one.

Thanks for the comment.
I have been using task manager as I try to play the DVD & streams.
CPU is a 100% pegged straight line.
Even shut down everything else while trying.
I'm done, hit the wall.. right?
s#@t
Oh well, it was a good fight.
What would be needed if.......?

Thanks

I was hoping you weren't going to say the CPU.
That was my suspicion.
The P4 2.6 in the best I can get for this board so I guess I'm stuck unless someone has something to add. Would anyone else care to make a suggestion, or validate it's the CPU.
The whole system is working very well except for the skips and staggers when try to play video or steams in mirror mode.
I'm just curios, what is happening that would cause this. Is it the video card memory at only 128 x two dual cards a problem....or just a straight CPU horse power problem?
Thanks again,
Gary

Most likely it's the CPU if usage is at 100%, but I've also noticed slightly jerky video mirroring even if the CPU isn't maxed out, and UltraMon is set to update the screen 30 times per second. Not sure yet what causes this, I'm going to look into this for a later release.

I have tested with 3.0.7 on Windows 7, but with videos performance will most likely be pretty much the same with 2.7.1 (which handles mirroring differently).

Christian and who ever would like to venture a guess.
I am running Beta 3.0.7 in XP home.
I had ver. 2.7.1 but there were problems, taskbars, retaining correct resolutions, etc.

Ver. 3.0.7 great in all its functions and in every operation. It's still the video stagger and stepping with video play back and streaming. (only when switched to mirror mode)
Hope that helps your pursuits some, I'd recommend ver. 3.0.7 highly for functionality.

Could it be my video cards? 128mg in a dual x 2.
For 4 mon. setup?
I tried a few other things today:
I run Tuneup 2010, so I enabled the turbo mode which just temporarily shuts down baxck ground programs and maintainability stuff, NO improvement.
I chaged the color depth on all my monitors to 16 bit. Nothing.
I even disable 2 of my monitors in the ultramon menu, and then tried the mirroring funtion with my 2 remaining monitors, still no luck.

Could the mirroring mode of ultramon alone be eating a huge amount of resources???
If you'd like to keep exploring these issues with me, get back to me after you think about and try new things, I'll do the same, and keep your issues in mind as I work also.
Thanks,
Gary O

Hi,
Also, my (2) twins are nvidea,
I am using the nvidea drivers, OK?

But, When I installed ultramon, I disabled the nvidea control panel, should I have done that, or should I be using them in conjunction,
Thanks as always,
Gary O

Any other thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.

The video card can affect performance, but if you're running at 100% CPU the processor is the most likely bottleneck, UltraMon mirroring can use quite a bit of CPU by itself, to check this select the Processes tab in Task Manager and take a look at CPU usage by UMMirrorClient.exe.

Disabling the nView Desktop Manager won't affect UltraMon mirroring.
