I’m running UltraMon 2.7.1 on Windows XP SP3. When I start UltraMon, the Smart Taskbar will flicker on the second monitor then disappear. I can restart the Smart Taskbar from the system tray with the same effect. If I look at Task Manager while restarting the Smart Taskbar, the process “UltraMonTaskbar.exe” shows up briefly, and then disappears. No error messages are shown.
If I try UltraMon 3.0.7, I get the same results with the following error message:
UltraMon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit.
More information:
Version: 3.0.7
OS: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 x32
Source file: .\DeskTaskBarManager.cpp
Line: 1388
Return value: 0
Last error: 5

You'll get this error if UltraMon can't install a hook in the main taskbar. Do you have a security application installed which might prevent other applications from hooking explorer.exe?

I have Zone Alarm Pro installed. I just figured out that the error only occurs if Zone Alarm Pro is running when Smart Taskbar starts. If I start Zone Alarm Pro after Smart Taskbar, I don’t get the error and everything seems to run fine. It’s been about a year since I used both Zone Alarm and Smart Taskbar together (I was without dual monitors for a while), but I didn’t have any problems back then. Any workaround suggestions?

Update: I have disabled all features in Zone Alarm Pro (while allowing Zone Alarm Pro to continue to run), with no success.

Maybe a new feature in Zone Alarm, the UltraMon taskbar always installed a hook in explorer.exe. I would recommend contacting their support regarding this, they'll be able to tell if there's a fix/workaround.

Turns out it was a bug in ZoneAlarm Pro. I had disabled their OS Firewall because it interfeared with another program that I use often. For some reason OS Firewall was preventing UltraMonTaskBar from hooking into explorer even though it was disabled. But since OS Firewall was disabled, it ignored me when I told it that UltraMonTaskBar was a trusted application. Enabling OS Firewall, setting UltraMonTaskBad to trusted, then disabling OS Firewall resolved the issue.
