like to close my laptop and use the extenal monitor & external keyboard only. However, when I close my laptop, the external monitor turns off too. How can I keep the external monitor ON and use the laptop as desktop while I am in my office?

Go to Control Panel > Power Options to change what happens if you close the lid, the default is to put the system on standby.
