My question is I have a dell laptop latitude 6500 with a dock and two 20 inch monitors hooked up via dvi. I want all three monitors to work at the same time two 20's and the laptop screen. Is that possible with just software? The nvidia software only gives me the option for laptop and 1 extra or two extras and no laptop. I have read a lot and there are a lot of conflicting post please help me out with this.

You'll need additional hardware for this, for example a USB video card. See the Multi-Monitor Guide for more information.
