but if there is no 2nd monitor, e.g. during travel, those opened recently on Mon 2 disappear into cyberspace, i.e. to the ghost Mon 2, and are no longer accessible. Can UltraMon exorcise those ghost apps to materialize back on Mon 1?

Currently that's not supported, I'm going to look into a feature for moving offscreen apps back to the visible desktop for a future release.
Make sure the secondary monitor is also disabled under Display Properties. Some apps may still open offscreen, to move them, right-click the taskbar button, select Move from the menu, then use the arrow keys to move the application.
