Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Ultramon restores icons in the wrong place (upon startup or whenever restoring)

Greetings. I'm using Ultramon 3.0.10 on Windows 7 x64 with two monitors side by side (primary on the left, secondary on the right).
The issue I want to report has actually been happening to me since version 2.4 on Windows XP (if memory serves), with both this computer and another one, but right now the only situation I can reproduce is on Seven.
Essentially, whenever I use the "restore icons" command, most icons do get where they're supposed to be, save for a few. Lately, this has been the case of a couple of icons, two shortcuts, for videogames Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (but in the past this included other ones). These two icons lay side by side, with the Mass Effect icon on the left and the Mass Effect 2 one on the right.
Now, no matter where on the extended desktop these two icons lay, if I use the restore command or if I reboot the computer and Ultramon starts up, the Mass Effect icon moves right below its original position on the grid, and the Mass Effect 2 icon moves where the other one was. Naturally, when the icon that goes down is on the bottom of the monitor, it moves up to the top and one position to the right.

There are many other icons and shortcuts on the desktop, but right now, these two are the only ones that do this weird thing. I've even tried recreating the shortcuts anew, but the behavior remains. What could be causing this problem?

I'm not sure what might have caused this on XP, but on Windows 7/Vista there's an issue with icons whose names begin with the same character(s). Renaming the icons should fix the problem.

This is actually a Windows issue, but I'm going to look into a workaround for one of the next releases.

Thanks for the tip. I've once again remade the icons from scratch (they're made by the Steam client), and right now, it's working fine. Don't know why it worked this time, but I'll keep the solution in mind. Keep up the good work. :)

I have the same issue with my Ultramon 3.0.10 in Win 7 x64 Ultimate.

I have 4 icons on the very bottom row of icons (lowest possible and closest to the taskbar) on my primary desktop (secondary desktop is on the left of primary). The 2 right most icons will move 1 "slot" up at every computer restart / boot up. The row of icons above the very bottom one only has 2 icons, aligned left, so that the two icons which "jump", jump to free spots.

I just disabled the "preserve position of desktop icons" option, and when I did, the two icons in question jumped from their normal position to one row above, just as from a restart. I have not tried yet to reboot and see if they will stay put.

Furthermore, the two icons in question do not have names even remotely similar.

I have had similar issues in another Win 7 computer and on a Win XP machine. The movement of the icons was always done on reboot, possibly at other times as well, but the actual position they went to is different from the explanation above. In my other win 7 box, two icons would trade place, and if left as such, after another restart one would jump to another, previously free location.

On both computers I run Nvidia cards, and thus their divers + manager. On both the manager is not a tray icon, and from what I can tell, it should not interfere with resolution or icon location upon boot.

Thank you for any information you can come up with.

Andy, icons could also get moved up when the additional taskbar(s) get added, to check if that's the problem, try if disabling the Smart Taskbar under UltraMon Options > Smart Taskbar fixes the problem.

Christian;

I'm wondering if you could expand on this Windows 7 problem some more, so I can figure out the 'right' way to rename my icons to make the problem go away.

I have several sets of icons that are shortcuts that may, or may not, point to the same target depending on what they are, such as iTunes (and "iTunes (right)" on my other monitor), Cygwin (and "Cygwin #2"), and TweetDeck ("TweetDeck 2") and it's been driving me crazy as well, as it seems intermittent when the "Restore Now" will, or will not, put things back in the wrong place.

I'm sure it's not a Smart Taskbar issue, or changing resolution issue, because things are pretty static here on my 4 monitors, other than the occasional reboot, or Restore-Now, when I get things in new places.

For "starting with the same name" - is it only when they have the exact same target-name? or does it vary? Is there some place you can point us with more information on this??

Thanks,
David

It's only the name of the shortcut, target doesn't matter. Cygwin and Cygwin #2 may cause the problem, but Cygwin and #2 Cygwin won't.

BTW, a workaround for this issue should be in the next release, 3.1.0.

I installed UltraMon on my computer a few days ago. I didnt like it too much so I decided to uninstall it, but after uninstalling it a problem occured: Each time after restarting my computer, all icons would auto-arragne themselves at the left edge of the screen. You said UltraMon doesnt affect anything permanently, but it seems it does. I fixed it by doing system restore. I have win7 x64

Seems unlikely that this would be related to UltraMon, I also can't reproduce this issue, uninstalling UltraMon has no effect on icon settings such as auto arrange (tested on Windows 7 with UltraMon 3.1.0).

Hello-

In my office, I have a 2 monitor set up (2, 24") that is connected to my laptop dock.

If I work directly on my laptop (not attached to the docking station) and then dock at a later point, my icons are moved around and will not move back to the original position if I hit restore. so inevitably, I have to manually move my icons nback to the original position every time I dock at my office.

I used to have (2) 19" monitors attached to my docking station and never had a problem. It has only been an issue since I upgraded to 24" monitors. I am currently at 3.0.10

Any help would be appreciated.

Josh, resolution shouldn't matter, try disabling automatic icon positioning via UltraMon Options > General (uncheck 'preserve position of desktop icons'), that should fix the problem. You can still save/restore icon positions manually via UltraMon menu > Desktop Icons.
