Hello
New here.....So Good morning to all of you and please accept this language coming issued by a frenchman.

I am in the trying period of UltraMon with Win XP Pro SP6 and two monitors. I have created a wallpaper with Photoshop. It's only made of differents squares and rectangles which I want to use to "dispose" my icones

Problem : I cannot move the icones. As soon as I push them....They come back at their previous station
Yes I have desactivated "preserve position" in Menu Options...and restart computer

No Luck...Well I like very much this soft and I want to buy it but if I cannot move icones

Unfortunately I don't know what might cause this, but this isn't related to UltraMon, desktop icons are handled by the operating system. UltraMon will only restore icon positions during startup if 'preserve position of desktop icons' is checked.

To verify that the issue isn't related to UltraMon, try if you still have the problem without UltraMon running or installed.

Hello, I have a similar problem with Ultramon 3.0.10. I have windows 7 ultimate, 2 monitors, and have had the same issue on multiple win 7 and win xp systems, with different versions of ultramon.

The basic problem is as follows: icons on the desktop move around at startup, normally always the same icons move from the same places to the same different locations. For example, the bottom right two icons of a set of 4 jump up to a higher row upon startup. Above these icons is a row of 2 icons. Everything is left aligned, with task bar on the bottom.

I did recently notice that when powering down, the task bar disappears and all icons drop about 1cm (or less) before the system powers down. I am unsure if it helps any, but this is what I have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

May seem like an obvious question, but have you disabled the "Auto arrange icons" setting? Right click on the desktop, go to Arrange Icons By and uncheck Auto Arrange.

On Windows 7 it is under View.

Might be related to the additional taskbar getting added, you could check if the problem goes away if you disable the Smart Taskbar under UltraMon Options > Smart Taskbar.

Auto Arrange is indeed turned off, and if I disable the task bar, then there is no reason to have ultramon at all :). If the options are 2 icons that move and not having the secondary bar, well let the icons do their thing. Now the best solution, or rather the only acceptable one, is to have the bar, and keep the icons in place.

Thanks for the suggestions though, keep them coming, maybe one of them will do it.

If it's indeed caused by the Smart Taskbar, there's no real fix for this, the icons get moved by Windows when the new always-on-top toolbar gets added.

Maybe I did not mention this in my first message, so pardon me about that. The icons being moved are on the primary monitor, and not on the secondary one, thus the addition of the secondary monitor's bar should (theoretically) not affect them.

Could still be related to the Smart Taskbar, to verify this check what happens if you disable/enable the Smart Taskbar, you can do this easily via UltraMon menu > Smart Taskbar.

Indeed it could be the issue, yet unlikely. Furthermore, if it is the taskbar, then, as you have said, there is no (known) fix for this, and the main feature of ultramon is indeed the secondary task bar.
We come to a standstill as using ultramon without the secondary task bar is nearly like not having the program at all, for utility's sake. The point would be for the guys from ultramon to test this in house and produce a fix as many users are having similar problems.

Are there any settings in ultramon that alter the spacing between the original windows task bar and the bottom row of icons? If so, possibly finding and disabling such option will help troubleshoot this problem.

Thanks for the help, keep pushing out ideas, maybe one of them will be the one.

I just tried disabling ultramon, and indeed it puts a space between the taskbar and the closes row of icons. Very strangly enough, when I disable ultramon (closed it, but did not restart) I could no longer move certain icons (especially the 2 that keep jumping around) to some places on the desktop. I tried with other icons and some work in some places, but not others. It seems to deny some icons from being in certain "boxes" (since grid align is turned on). If grid align is turned off, any location seems to be fine for any icon.

Any ideas?

Not sure why this would happen, but it seems unlikely that UltraMon would cause this. Unfortunately I'm not aware of a fix for the issue with the icons and the Smart Taskbar, the operating system moves the icons when the toolbar gets added, not UltraMon.

While it might be the system that moves the icons around, it is due to the enabling of ultramon, thus it seems more likely that this is a feature in ultramon.

I'll reinstate the event, as it seems there is some confusion. The icons are all on the primary monitor, there are no icons on the secondary monitor. The primary monitor holds the original windows 7 task bar. When ultramon is launched, every icon on the primary monitor is moved towards the top of the screen by say 1cm (less than half an inch).
This feature does not seem to be OS based as it only happens when ultramon is launched, and when ultramon is closed the icons are lowered 1cm back to their original place.
Now, it would be interesting to find the setting (maybe it is internal and it is not possible to set it through the "settings") that does this, and disable it and see if icons still move around.

As for some of the icons in windows not being able to move to certain locations, that indeed sounds like a windows issue.

Thanks

This issue isn't specific to UltraMon, you'll also get this when adding another always-on-top desktop toolbar. The issue seems to be caused by the operating system reserving screen space for the always-on-top toolbar.

I'm disappointed. Nine months ago, we had a similar thread going but the problem still hasn't been resolved. As noted in that thread, I was able to stop my nomadic icons by slightly changing their names, e.g., the Adobe folder shortcut to "2Adobe." It's ugly but it works. At that time, I had one "A...", and one "N..." icon who wouldn't stay in their beds. I've since moved to Win7 and now it's a "D..." and an "N..." So, is that progress? Three more OS versions and we'll have convergence on just "N".

Note: you may think you have more icons moving if one's movement is displacing the next column of icons.

I am quite disappointed myself, so much so that I stop posting here because the staff is unable and unwilling to fix a problem in their software. While it is indeed Windows that will decide how to arrange your icons, it is ultramon that triggers the move and it is ultramon's responsibility to ensure icon position is unchanged.
The very simple workaround for ultramon programmers would be to take note of icon location on screen and just restore that when it loads and when it is turned off. Basically an automated "restore icons" option click. Not a true fix, but much better than the current situation.
It is quite shameful nothing has been done for so long, especially when so many people are having similar issues.

That's a different issue, the next release should have a workaround for the Vista/Windows 7 issue with similarly named icons.
