Every time I enable the second monitor with UltraMon, the monitor shows the application that I am working on, then goes to a black screen / is in "idle" mode. I disable the monitor and it stays in this mode. If I enable it again, it comes back alive for about a second and then goes back to this idle black screen. Any suggestions on how to keep both monitors up and running?

Do you have the same problem if you enable the monitor via UltraMon menu > Windows Display Properties?

Yes.
My secondary monitor currently is receiving power, and flikers on when I log on to my computer after it is asleep. UltraMon Windows Display Properties shows both monitors, says they both are on 1024x768 pixels, and the box is checked for "extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" for #2. When I hit "identify", a 1 pops up on my laptop screen, but the second monitor stays black. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like everything should work fine. Does the monitor have multiple inputs (VGA, DVI, etc)? If yes, make sure the correct input is selected, you can do this via the controls on the monitor.
