I'm running a left display @ 1280*1024 on a 9400GT, a middle display @ 1650*1050 on 9800GTX, and a right display $ 1280*1024 on 980GTX.
I'm running the trial of UM, and can't figure out how to make a game (i.e. GTR2 and GRID in my case) think that I have one wide display. Even if I run it in windowed mode, I can't stretch the game out to my wing monitors, and GTR2's config stops at 1650*1050- It doesn't even show a 1920*1080 option. I also haven't been able to fake thge computer into running the center display at HD (thinking that i could run it in windowed mode, and thus get it on the wing monitors).
I was referred here from another forum, as I was told that UM could help me set up my system for what I'm wanting?

UltraMon can't help with this, the display driver would need to support this (span mode).

So what, exactly then, is the purpose of UM, other than adding a task bar at the bottom of each screen?

See the Feature Overview for more information on UltraMon features.

Well, I'm not worried about moving windows fro screen to screen, i'm not worried about having programs always open in the same window, I don't span backgrounds.....I'm short of ideas on why I should pay $40 for something that really doesn't do anything I can't do with the mouse, or that I really don't care about?
