I have the desktop icons hidden and open desktop items from the desktop menu on the main menu. 2 times a day I'll go to open an item and the menu comes up but freezes, no icons in it and the task bar will not respond to any clicks. occaisionally the only way to get out of it is to 3 finger salute and tell it to shut down. it always says that explorer.exe is not responding and to end now. after restart everything is fine for several hours.
I thought this might be a windows thing so I took a fresh drive, installed windows and everything and still get the same results. the issue started about 3 months ago or so. I had used ultramon 3.1.0 for many months without issue. I have now turned off the smart taskbar and for 2 days have not had issues.
I am useing an Xp pro SP3 with 3 monitors and IE7.
any suggestions? I would like to turn smart taskbar back on.

I haven't seen this myself so far, but the UltraMon taskbar does install a hook in explorer.exe, so there might be a conflict there.
Have you noticed anything which seems to cause the issue, for example do you have the same problem immediately after a system restart as well, or only if a specific application is running?
One other thing you could test: when you get this the next time, check if the UltraMon taskbar still responds to rightclicking.

no known triggers. it works fine after a reboot or a fresh startup. as stated, I access my desktop icons from the desktop menu of the task bar, prefering to hide the desktop icons. about halfway through the day I will click the double-arrow >> link to show the rest of the content of the desktop menu and the menu comes up white and void of icons. this white menu stays just as it is for a long time. during this time I can not click on anything in the taskbar. right clicking the Ultramon icon is not an option when this occures. after it releases, the desktop menu will do the exact same thing if I click it again.
this started on a windows xp load that was working and continues on a fresh install. again, yesterday was uneventful with the Smart Taskbar turned off.
could this be from a windows update? a java or active-X thing? would really like to get the Smart Bar back, got quite used to it being there.

Difficult to say what might cause this, if it only occurs after a couple of hours it could also be a resource issue, if you want to do further testing I would recommend re-enabling the Smart Taskbar and leaving Task Manager open, once the issue has occurred check memory usage in Task Manager (on the Performance tab).
Something else you can try: leave a command prompt open, then when the issue occurs, close the Smart Taskbar by running the following command:
"%ProgramFiles%\UltraMon\UltraMonTaskbar.exe" /stop
Then check if the menu now displays properly.

it's not a resource thing as when this happens the cpu is at single digits.
I curently have the Smart bar turned off and had it happen for the first time since turning off the smart bar yesterday. so it has happened with just the normal taskbar. I open the desktop menu on the taskbar and the menu pops up but is blank and will not go away and nothing on the taskbar responds.
This setup worked for months and then started a few months ago, I suspect a windows update, but can't be sure. if anything makes sense to me later I'll post it but for now it seams that it will be an ongoing issue.

I have found that when this happens, if I open Task Manager and kill explorer.exe then relaunch it from a dosbox that everything seems to work and the popup menu responds like it should. appears that it is in the explorer.exe that the problem arrises.
