I have a HP desktop that is hooked up to a 24" screen via VGA and have a 46" Sharp Aquos that is hooked up via HDMI. the screens are in different rooms and i want to be able to use the 46" tv as a monitor and lay in bed being able to use the keyboard and mouse but i cannot get the monitors to mirror each other and look like hd quality

If you only use a single display at a time, I would recommend switching between the two displays instead of using mirroring, just set the display you want to use as primary, and disable the other one.
If you have UltraMon installed, you can do this quickly with the ToggleSingleMon script.
