After booting up my comp, opening Firefox 4 regularly causes UltraMon (though not UltraMon Toolbar) to crash. Windows 7 (64-bit), steers me toward these files for clues to the cause:
C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Loca\Tem\WERF152.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER7C0.tmp.appcompat.txt C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER9E3.tmp.mdmp
I have created a .DMP file. Would anyone care to have a look at it?

Meant to mention I'm running Ultramon 3.0.10. Thanks.

Christian Studer 2011-04-08 08:24
Please try if you still have the issue with version 3.1.0.
If yes, let me know and I'll send you a link to upload the crash dump to our server.

Thanks, Christian. I updated to 3.1.0 and UM still crashes when I open Firefox after a reboot. May I upload the dump file?
Thanks again, Rick

You can upload the crash dump here, please note that you'll need to zip the file, only .zip files can be uploaded.

Got it, thanks. Do you still have this issue if you restart UltraMon, then start Firefox again?
Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
|
Rick N. 2011-04-12 03:59
Nope, only the first time after reboot. The only change I've made to stock installation was to add a couple of changer scripts/shortcuts and to delay startup by several seconds to avoid a different error.
As I type that last, I it that may well be the issue. If so, I'll need help remembering where I made that change...
|
Christian Studer 2011-04-12 10:10
Difficult to say what exactly would cause this, what happens is that UltraMon fails to allocate memory.
Startup can be delayed by setting the AutoStartDelay registry value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Realtime Soft\UltraMon\<version>.
What error did you get if you didn't delay UltraMon startup?

Funny you should axe. Looks like you and I hashed that error out in February:
Rick 2011-02-23 10:47 I'm running Ultramon 3.0.10 on Windows 7, x64. I've added a shortcut for Wallpaper Auto Changer 2 to my startup items folder. On every startup I get this error:
Auto Changer 2.vbs Line: 804 Char: 3 Error: Permission denied Code: 800A0046 Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
The script runs flawlessly when I start it manually via the Shortcuts menu. Any help for me?
Thanks. Christian Studer 2011-02-23 15:07 You'll get this error if the script fails to delete the file 'UltraMon Wallpaper.bmp' in the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Realtime Soft\UltraMon.
Maybe UltraMon is accessing the file at the same time, or you have the folder on a network drive which isn't available yet. To fix this, you could delay script execution: add the following on line 68 (after Option Explicit):
WScript.Sleep 10000
This will wait for 10 seconds (= 10000 milliseconds).
Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com Rick 2011-02-24 12:21 Thanks, mon. That fixed me right up. LOVE this script.

Christian Studer 2011-04-13 07:08
It's very unlikely that the two issues are related. Do you currently have the AutoStartDelay registry value set, or does only the script have a delay set?
Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
|
Rick N. 2011-04-13 11:39
I only made the script change, I never changed the registry.
|
Christian Studer 2011-04-14 07:42
Delaying UltraMon startup as well might be worth a try, seeing that UltraMon runs fine if you start it manually later.
No idea though what exactly would cause the issue, a memory allocation usually doesn't fail, especially directly after startup.

I'll try that. Once I navigate to the AutoStartDelay, precisely how do I proceed in order to make that change? Rt. Click >>>modify>>>enter value data? If so, what numbers?
Thanks, Christian.
|
Christian Studer 2011-04-14 10:22
You can also double-click the value, just make sure to set Base to Decimal. Then set the value to the number of seconds by which startup should be delayed, I would try 10-20 seconds.

Rick N. 2011-04-14 16:40
Nope, that didn't solve it. The crash pattern is the same as before the registry change. *sigh*
Anyway, I'm prepared to live with this. I don't reboot that often and, as I say, it's only a matter of restarting UM with a click.
I appreciate the effort, Christian.

UltraMon still gets launched immediately even with AutoStartDelay set, but it will just wait with creating buttons, taskbars etc for the specified number of seconds.
I would recommend trying the following: delete the UltraMon shortcut in Start Menu > Programs > Startup, then test if launching UltraMon manually always works fine. If it does, it would then be possible to create a script which gets executed at startup, waits a couple of seconds, then launches UltraMon.

Same problem here...
Launching FF4 as the first program causes UM to crash... If something else before (like word) and it is ok... After crash if re-launched manually everything is ok... I tried the autodelay stuff in the registry but nothing changed...
Any idea for this, because it's painful....??? Thnx!

Hello, So I removed the shortcut. Then start manually, then start FF4 -> Crash...! Again...if I dont open FF4 first everything is ok... Another idea???
(Please..also note that I dont know how to write a script...)
|
Ollives 2011-04-25 19:02
Me again...
Also..If I remove the shortcut. Then start FF4 then start UM manually -> It is ok...!
Note also that any combination with or without the shortcut in startup: if you start FF4, then ultramon (manually or after crash) it will always work if you close and restart FF4...I mean the trouble is only the very first time you open FF4 (if first program)...
Amazing!

Very odd issue, if you're interested you could send me a crash dump as well, to confirm it's really the same as Rick's issue.
To save a crash dump, don't close the error message, then open Task Manager, select the Processes tab, then right-click UltraMon.exe and select Create Dump File from the menu. Let me know once you have the crash dump.

Note that when crash occurs...UM taskbar is ok... Let me know for the upload

Done! Let me know if you got it! I hope you will find a solution!
|
Christian Studer 2011-04-30 09:12
Got it, thanks. It's not the same exact issue as Rick's, but also a memory allocation which fails.
No idea what might cause this, and why Firefox would trigger the issue, very odd. Also haven't been able to reproduce this myself so far.
As a workaround it would be possible to use a script to launch UltraMon, the script would launch UltraMon, then Notepad, then close Notepad again, this way Firefox would never be the first app launched after UltraMon. Let me know if you would be interested in this.

Thanks for your answer! It is weird that you were not able to reproduce the problem...I don't know if this can help but note that I am on 64-bit Windows 7... Also...Yes I would be interested by the script if you can write it and explain how to use it...That would be really great and nice from you! I will be out of town till next thursday but I will be ready to test it when I will be back! Let me know!

Christian Studer 2011-05-01 07:59
I have tested on 64-bit Windows 7 as well, with UltraMon 3.1.0 and Firefox 4.0.1.
You can download a script which does this here: LaunchUmThenNotepad.vbs
To use the script to launch UltraMon, delete the UltraMon shortcut from Start Menu > Programs > Startup, then place the LaunchUmThenNotepad.vbs script into the folder. The script will then get executed automatically when you log in.

Hello Christian,
Thanks for the script...! However...I have some good news. I upgraded Firefox to 4.0.1 and since everything is going ok. I then updated to W7 SP1 and it is still ok... So for now I will not apply the script and check if it stays ok. I will let you know if there are any problems...! I thank you very very much for your help and I am sorry for the inconvenience!

I'd just like to add that I'm experiencing this same issue, when opening Firefox as the first program after boot.
Win 7 Ultimate, SP1, highly modified startups, this is a memory allocation as well, but appears to be occurring *after* the program is up and running.
No, I won't be uploading a crash dump. You should have enough user data to fix the damn problem. Kthxbai
