I'd like a feature that creates the effect of creating two 'pseudo-monitors' from one real monitor.

The more rectangular these widescreen monitors become the more wasted space there is when a program is maximized and the more time you spend trying to meticulously position two windows.

Cascaded tiling of windows would be one way of accomplishing this however has it's limitations.

Would it be possible to have ultramon support splitting a monitor in half horizontally or vertically, creating two taskbars and two distinct areas for maximizing? Splitting a monitor several times might be neat but not entirely necessary.

Support for dividing a monitor with regard to window management will be considered for a future release, currently there are no plans to extend this to other features such as the taskbar, wallpaper etc.

There is already some support for this, look for the FitLeft/RightHalf scripts, and the VMonMaximize/MoveWnd scripts: scripts library. You could also do this with SplitView.

Hey thanks for reply, split windows does look interesting / largely what i was thinking. I haven't tried it yet, does it interoperate with ultramon in any way? (E.g. taskbars for splits?)

I also recently thought it might be useful to split across multiple monitors.

To explain, consider having two widescreen monitors which are tiled vertically, one on top of the other. Would be useful to create split running vertically across the middle of each monitor creating 'in effect' two monitors which have large vertical and short horizontal dimensions instead of the other way around.

This would allow to maximize windows to achieve a quick, large vertical instead of the large horizontal.

No, SplitView only handles window management. Should work fine together with UltraMon, but you might need to adjust the position of the UltraMon window buttons so that they don't overlap the SplitView buttons, you can do this via UltraMon Options > Buttons and Menu Commands, custom button spacing.
