Windows 7 sp1. UM 3.10. Toshiba R830

I just migrated to this laptop from a Lenovo T61 running XP. On the T61, whenever I disconnected and reconnected the video cable to the external monitor, windows open on the external monitor would always return to their proper positions.

But with the Toshiba, reconnecting the video cable to the external monitor results in all windows remaining on the laptop screen. Very frustrating and time wasting. Any fix?

When you disconnected the monitor cable on XP, did the applications on the disconnected monitor get moved to the laptop's internal monitor?

Yes.

I don't know if this was done by Windows XP or a video card utility, but it wasn't due to UltraMon.

What you could do is save/restore window positions manually using the Save/RestoreWndPos scripts, unfortunately there is no way to do this automatically.

Omg, sorry. My answer should have been no. Even the original post was misstated.

On XP, disconnecting the video cable did not move the windows. Reconnecting the video cable did not move the windows. So, the windows stayed in the position of the disconnected monitor. Possibly that was a problem when I first got the laptop for years ago. But I easily adapted because I knew about the alt tab method of activating the window and then pressing a defined hot key to move the window to the laptop screen.

On XP, I would hibernate, disconnect the video cable, wake up, and the windows would be repositioned to the laptop screen. But here was the real convenience: After hibernating again, reconnecting the video cable, and waking up again, windows, regardless of program, previously on the external monitor, would be repositioned to their original positions on the external monitor. That does not happen with my current environment. Is there anything I can do to recreate that behavior?

I've now done some testing myself, and see the same behavior as you on Windows 7.

Using the scripts I mentioned earlier to save/restore window positions will work fine, but I haven't found a way to automate this. I tried using Task Scheduler with a lock/unlock workstation action, but this didn't work.

If you can find a way to automate this, I would also be very happy. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop that I frequently must dock and undock during the day and it would be a huge convenience if the windows went back to the second monitor upon re-docking.
