Greets, got a new Lenovo Y480 laptop wiht 64bit Win7 today and of course the first thing I do is install Ultramon 3.2.1 64bit. Got the script set up just fine and all is good except for one thing:

Ultramon just won't start up at boot time and yes the little icon is sitting in the Startup folder so it should start up. Even did the repair function selection but that didn't help either. I tried to install the 32bit version but it wouldn't let me.

So hmm... what could be preventing the startup? Something Lenovo-ish? Next order of business I guess would be a fresh install...

Does starting UltraMon manually via the shortcut work fine?

Yes, it works fine when I manually start it via the shortcut in the Startup folder

I just tested if disabling UltraMon via msconfig.exe would cause this behavior, but in that case the shortcut would get removed from the startup folder.

What happens if you copy the shortcut for Internet Explorer or another application to the startup folder, does the application get started after login?

I had to solve this by deleting the shortcut in the startup folder that Ultramon made upon installation, create my own shortcut from its .exe in C:Program Files/Ultramon and then placing that shortcut in the startup folder. Now it starts up. Odd eh?

Glad to hear you found a workaround, unfortunately I don't know what might have caused the problem.

Although I don't have this issue, I have a question about how UltraMon 3.2.1 is started, but my question may be related to this problem.

On WinXp 32-bit, why is UltraMon's installed shortcut in my Startup Folder a shortcut to:

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{ED7FE81C-378C-411D-B5B4-509B978BA204}\IcoUltraMon.ico

This is clearly seen, for ex, using SysInternal's "autorun" command.

Everything works fine, there is no issue on my WinXP 32-bit machine using this shortcut.

But no other installed app uses this kind of fancy GUID shortcut, not in Startup folder or HKCU\Run or HKLM\Run ... so why does UltraMon?

Why not have the installer just create a simple shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Ultramon\UltraMon.exe"?

It's a type of shortcut used by Windows Installer, for example Office also uses the same type of shortcuts.

I don't think Andy's issue was related to this as the shortcut worked fine when he executed it manually.

Any advantage of one kind of shortcut over the other?
Christian Studer   2012-08-24 08:30
Not for UltraMon, but Windows Installer uses this type of shortcut to support advertising, where an application gets installed on demand the first time you launch it.
