Hi,
Ultramon crashed with a fatal error, and I have tried reloading it, uninstalling it, and reinstalling the latest version, and it all fails with Ultramon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit. More Information Version 3.2.1 OS 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3x32 Source File: DeskTaskBarManager.cpp Line: 1446 Return value: 0 Last error: 5
I hope you can help - I have tried all I am able to do, reinstalling from C:\ etc.
Thanks

You'll get this if the Smart Taskbar, UltraMonTaskbar.exe, can't install a hook in the main taskbar, explorer.exe.
Check if you have a security application (firewall, antivirus) installed which might prevent this, if yes you would need to configure it to allow UltraMonTaskbar.exe to install the hook.

Thanks Christian, that is indeed the issue, I close Zonealarm and bingo, the taskbar works again.
However, I cannot see anywhere to allow 'hooks' in Zonealarm, and all the Ultramon elements - UltramonDesktop, UltramonShortcuts, UltramonTaskbar and Ultramon itself are configured in Zonealarm as fully trusted, all fields set to 'allow' and still the same issue.
I see that others have had the same issue, with a post in 2009 and another in 2011.
However, as it is a Zonealarm problem (thanks for pointing me in the right direction) I realise I have to pursue this with them. Funny it has worked no problem with ZA for years, then suddenly fails.
Thanks again
Ian

Odd issue, I would also have expected this to work fine if UltraMonTaskbar.exe is set to be fully trusted, let me know what you find out.
A hook is a DLL which gets loaded into another process, the taskbar uses this to get notified about task creation for example, and UltraMon.exe uses hooks for features like the window buttons.
