I'm getting an 8500 Radeon.
When I start up a game, assuming the game does not support multiple monitors, do I need to disable the monitor first, or will it just go dark while I play?

Depends. For DirectX games the second display will stay visible, but it won't be accessible. For OpenGL you'd may have to disable the second to get the game to run.

unless you are running winxp
i have found that with winxp pro i do not have to disable the 2nd monitor (win me i had to). in some games (q3) at fullscreen you cant get to the second monitor though. if the game is opengl and supports alt-tab (q3-no but serious sam-yes) you can get to the 2nd monitor. also-the colors get "washed out" on the 2nd display for some reason when running q3 (and only q3) fullscreen
