Are there any applications out there which just put up a big black window covering all monitors? It would be nice to run that when playing full screen games and when using my computer to view TV.

just deactivate whatever you have as a desktop pic, your desktop will be a solid color...it can be black or any other color you wish..just right click on the desktop>properties>background tab...choose whatever you want for a pic or none at all, maybe a blank black one if you don't want to change your desktop color...

Using a black background doesn’t hide the desktop icons.

... and anyhow, if it takes too much fiddling, it’ll be easier to just turn off the other monitors.
