I intend to buy two Philips 109B40 19" monitors and plug both into a single GeForce card and use nView to use them both.

Which one of these cards is best to buy for mostly dual monitor use?

(1) Geforce FX5600 128MB DDR AGP RP DVI VO

(2) GeForce 4 Ti4800SE 128MB DDR AGP RP DVI VO

With two monitors connected to it and being used at the same time, can the GeForce handle 1280x1024x32 @ 95hz?

TIA!

Either one of those should work just fine; the better the card, the better it will cope. My GeForce4 Ti4600 is presently quite happily dealing with 2048x1536 on the VGA port, and 1600x1200 (which appears to be the maximum) on the DVI port (using a DVI/VGA converter). The GF4 does just fine as it has two DACs (digital-to-analogue converters), one for each head, allowing for higher performance and greater resolutions.

The only deciding factor i can see here will be price and availability, and your personal needs.

whats the refresh rate like on those monitors?
i can't stand anything below 85Hz
fargis   2003-06-18 11:23
Sorry i'll correct myself first, both are running at 2048x1536 comfortably. Refresh rate is 60Hz; although that is personal preference - i've never used a higher rate on any monitor. Looking through display properties, i notice 1280x1024@85Hz or 100Hz should be possible on both heads.

What you plan to do should work fine, though I haven't tried it. On my PNY GeForce4 Ti4200 card I'm running both monitors at 1024x768, but one is at 85.hz, and one is at 75.hz. My monitors don't support 1280x1024@95.hz, so I can't try that setting.

Fargis: 60.hz? Don't your monitors flicker like strobe lights at that high resolution at 60.hz refresh? I assume they are CRT monitors. (LCD monitors don't flicker.)

Thank you fargis & ecarlson for your help.

fred:
Glad to help.

carlson:
No flickering, just a nice steady image on each (CRT) monitor. Works fine for me; like i said, i've never gone any higher than 60Hz on any monitor, ever, as i can't see any difference. Just bump your resolution up, ignore the refresh rate and enjoy the greater desktop space! hehe

Interesting that 60.hz looks fine to you. I think some people don't sense flicker, and others are very sensitive to it. 60.Hz at high-res looks almost like a strobe light to me it flickers so much.

I have seen people's screens flickering like crazy, and asked them how they can stand it, and they couldn't even tell it was happening, so I guess different people's eyes have different response times to fast changing light intensity.

I've also helped some people, who did notice the flicker and got headaches and eyestrain from it, by raising their refresh above 70.hz.

Some people are also bothered by the flicker of flourescent lights, and other's don't even notice.

Especially if you sit in front of your monitor for more than 12 hours a day like I do :-/

The GF4 TI 4600 can do 1200/1600@100hz on both outputs.
