is there any way other than http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm to get a TRUE windows taskbar across the whole monitor set up
it seems stupid to me to constrict it to the primary monitor

If you are using an nVidia based card the anser is yes:
Right click on the desktop, select Properties, settings tab, advanced button, GeForce tab, nView modes dropdown, select Horizontal Span, Apply, OK.

Ben: The only true spanning taskbar I know of is with NVidia cards in span mode (like Seahorse said). UltraMon and MultiMon taskbar will add additional taskbars to your other monitor(s), but they will only show the items on that monitor.
