I think time has arrived for 5 monitor portrait-mode monitor setups for us "early adopters".
We have pivot LCDs, versatile PCI cards, and even this software program Pivot PRo.
The benefits of portrait mode dont need to be mentioned, but will do so anyway -- (1) can work word dox much better with whole pages on each mon (2) much less time scrolling down on websites (3) large spreadsheets are a dream, and VERY IMPORTANTLY, (4) you actually will not have to turn your head when going from a gaze at mon 1 to mon 5......
QUESTIONs TO ALL -
(A) What is the best way to set up a 5 monitor, portrait-style set up? Seems like 17" would be the sweet spot in terms of cost right now.....with 1280x1024 res put in portrait.
(b) i have heard that the Pivot Pro software is unstable and reverses fields in some monitors under a 3 mon config in portrait. Is there better solution that Pivot Pro?
(c) WHAT IS THE BEST AND STABLE CARD COMBO ? Matrox Parhelia AGP card and Parhelia PCI 256 card ? I dont know.... Seems like it could be an incredible marketing tool for them if they can deliver that...
Thoughts anyone ???

I don't think you can do this with the Parhelia, due to the 3-monitor mode always using stretched mode, where Windows only recognizes a single large monitor instead of 3.

Maybe you could use 3 NVidia based cards, since the NVidia drivers have a rotate mode. If you're not doing games, just get 1 AGP and 2 PCI inexpensive NVidia cards with dual outs.
The only problem would be if you want to run all in digital mode (which I would recommend), since dual-DVI PCI cards are rare or expensive. Maybe a quad DVI AGP card and a single DVI PCI card would work. The quad card won't be cheap either, but then again, you mentioned Matrox cards, which are expensive, so maybe price isn't an issue.
Please let us know how it works out.

You can see results in gallery just posted.
5 portrait monitors.
It was very tricky setting it up. 3 video cards, plus the pivot pro software. Parhelia will not work in strech mode under portrait config (like mentioned above). THEY NEED TO FIX THAT..
But otherwise, it is good, and hope the thing remains stable.
Portrait is only way to go if you have 5 monitors in single row.....
2 QUESTIONS ---
(a) I believe Matrox is coming out with newer version soon that will allow for pivot?????
(b) And will it be able to combine a Parhelia agp card with a single Parhelia pci card to achieve portrait with stretch mode with the same features as a single Parhelia triple head in landscape mode?

Nice, but the gallery picture is too small to get a good look at the setup.

thanks eric -
need to post a better photo - 30 K limitation was a prob for me at the time.
Anyway, what are your thoughts about this -- from a broader perpectives of
(a) hardware (both current and likely in next 12 months) -- in areas of LCD screens in particular,
(b) software (narrow sense guess this means compatitbilty of drivers etc - but more broadly what this means if everyone has multi screens from a software app standpoint -- think about this....)
(c) application on a day to day basis -- on this score, it is overwhelming....
(d) the ability to manipulate information and multiple screens in ways only hinted at in your site today (such as the 10 mon configs for the rich traders, etc) --
MAYBE ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE actually gone from 1 to 3 will appreciate what I am talking about....
2 QUESTIONS =
Your considered thoughts ? (which I highly respect)
And is there a blog that you aware of that speaks to these issues ? (pass on to all)
LOOK FORWARD TO DIALOGUE on this.
