Currently we use a laptop and hook up the projector to the monitor out on the laptop so we can still use the laptop display and then project it onto the desktop but we use this with an interactive whiteboard so we need to be able to leave the work being displayed on the whiteboard but also to then use the laptop's display normally. Is this possible i searched on the forums but everyone was on about slightly different variations.

You need a video card/drivers that support an "extended Desktop" My ATI mobile 9500 in my HP supports this. Allowing you access to two seperate monitors, where you can drag your mouse across. But it doesn't support running different resolutions on each so both screen in my case have to be at the same resolution.
