When you say that the drivers prevent the external monitor from being selected as primary (from previous posts), do you mean it prevents UltraMon from selecting it as primary? I currently have an external LCD connected as primary and the laptop display is listed as removable. Of course, I can change which is primary and secondary by using the ATI Displays tab in Advance settings of the Display Properties. What I was hoping to do is setup one profile in which the laptop display will be primary and the only one enabled (for on the go). Another profile will have the external display as primary while the laptop is secondary (while at the desk) with each profile having its own icon positions. I can't just quickly switch the displays between primary and secondary since the laptop display has a wide aspect ratio (same 1280 resolution width but the resolution height is different so I would need to switch primary/secondary, adjust resolutions, icon placement, and then disable the secondary). I just want to be able to quickly make the change with a few clicks or a hotkey. Although the secondary display is listed as removable, primary/secondary is still switchable. I just want to know if this is at all possible. Thanks for such a great product anyway.

Both UltraMon and Windows won't be able to change the primary monitor.

The driver might still allow you to change the primary monitor, but this is a proprietary feature of the driver.

I'm going to look into adding support for changing driver-specific settings in UltraMon 3, but don't know yet if this will actually be possible.

FWIW, I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook which has the same problems - jump thru hoops to change the primary. Dell sells a lot of notebooks (hint, hint).

I'm using 3.0.10 and came here to find out how to do exactly what NS described.

I need three profiles:

1. "Portable" with only the monitor of my notebook.

2. "Office1" with:
Primary - 22" Widescreen external LCD Monitor
Secondary - Built-in monitor

3. "Office2" with:
Primary - 19" external LCD Monitor
Secondary - Built-in monitor

Is there any way to achieve this in UltraMon?

The Lenovo-supplied Intel GMA tool used to do this but unfortunately, Lenovo System Update updated my version today to the new version which no longer has "schemes" ("profiles").

You'll need to test if UltraMon can change the primary monitor on your system, if that works fine you'll be able to set up the display profiles as desired.

You can download a trial version of UltraMon here, right-click the UltraMon icon in the system tray and select Display Profiles from the menu to set up the profiles.
