Or, you can just remotely login to your desktop from your laptop using a remote protocol:

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Microsoft Intro to RDP (built into Windows XP Pro)

PCAnywhere - PCAnywhere (not free)

Yes, those are good options if you just want use the laptop monitor alone, and not use the laptop monitor as a second screen for your desktop. I use RADmin every day to connect to lots of other computers: great product and good price. I've also used VNC, but haven't used it in a few years. And I sometimes still use PCAnywhere, but it is very expensive.
