Hi,
I need some advice concerning the new graphic card I intend to buy. It has to drive a Dell 2005FPW and a Iiyama HM903DTA. The Dell is a 20inch widescreen LCD, the Iiyama a 19inch CRT. So I need a card that can handle a resolution of 1680x1050 via DVI, plus a res of 1280x1024 via VGA. I was thinking about the Matrox G550, but that's such an old card. I never play games, so I'd like a card with passive cooling.
Any advice would be much appreciated :-)

The Nvidia Quadro NVS 280 has no fan, but I don't know if it supports 1680x1050 via DVI.
Please note that you would need to use a DVI-to-VGA adapter for the analog monitor, the card uses either a dual DVI or dual VGA cable.

if you have no interest in 3D performance, there's nothing wrong with using an older card like the maxtrox G-series since 2D technology peaked several years ago. i continue to use g400's & g450's in all of my machines (nearly a dozen)...the cards are cheap, they don't have driver problems and nobody beats matrox in 2d font and sharpness.
the g550 is a solid choice. it has 1 dvi and 1 vga and can output to the resolutions you require, provided the DVI is your primary. otherwise, my second recommendation would be the ati radeon 9xxx cards.

I think I'll go for the G550. I still have one of the first G400's in loyal service (6 years), so I know about Matrox's quality products.
I was thinking about the G650 too, but I guess I don't really need it.
