I activated the multi monitor feature without a second monitor plugged in and told it extend to that monitor. so now my monitor won't work. there is only one output on the video card. how can i change beetween monitors?

Boot in safe mode by pressing F8 when starting windows. Change back to 1 monitor setup. Reboot.
If your one AGP card only has 1 output you will need either a PCI card for the second monitor or buy a modern card with 2 outputs.
The later would be the preferred option if your current card is old...
