We installed a video card and if you plug the monitor into it directly, it works, however, now when you unplug it and plug back into the regular monitor slot, the monitor does not work. Can anyone help? We are going to be adding the 2nd monitor, but now am not sure since that slot is not working.

I'm not sure I understand what you did. If you installed an AGP video card, it will disable the onboard video.

If you installed a PCI video card, then there is usually a way to get both outputs to work. Make sure you have monitors connected to both outputs before you turn the computer on. Then make sure both displays are listed in Windows Display Properties, then select "Extent desktop onto this monitor" for the non-active monitor.

If neither describes your situation, then please provide more details.
