I have a 9600 PRO w/ DVI+Analog+TVout and I have attached a CRT and a digital LCD.
What I don't get is that these cards and many others out there supposedly support four/eight/and so on displays. BUT WHERE DO THEY PLUG IN??? I have seen some Gallery pics of like 6 monitors with just a couple cards. HOW?
what precisely is meant by dualhead? is that physical connections?

the higher density video cards that support 4 or 8 monitors per card use a different type of external card connector than the dvi and vga d-sub connectors that you're probably familiar with.
the cards are bundled with a y-type adapter, one end is a 50-60 pincout connector that connectos to the video card, the other end of the adapter has multiple dvi/vga female connectors that you would plug your monitor cables into.

There's the Colorgraphic Xentera GT 8, but it is a PCI card.
Here is some info from their web site:
Xentera GT 8 (Available in PCI form factor)
- Support for eight screen VGA output at up to 2048x1536 per display
- Support for quad screen DVI output at up to 1600x1200 per display
- Support for quad screen TV output in NTSC or PAL

From reading the documentation on their web site, it doesn't mention span mode, or even anythng similar to it, not even for 2 monitors. You might want to contact them to find out: Colorgraphic
FYI: I think the 4-port cards are around $500, and the 8 port card is around $800. The 8-port only comes in PCI, while the 4-port is available in all 3 formats (PCI, AGP, PCI-e).
