Is there any way ultramon can make up for the uselessness of this thing (spanning only) and split it into three "real" screens?

Unfortunately not, UltraMon will treat the 3 monitors as a single wide monitor.

Uslessness? You've gotta be kidding. 9 out of 10 posts on this site say this is God's gift to mankind!
The moment it's out I will absolutely order one and hopefully have a positive post to say about it.

So in essence, this product would allow me to show video maximized across three screens and if I used ultramon with virtual screens I could, with a hot key, convert the single huge screen to 3 individual ones by setting the virtual script to use 3 screen on the matroxtriplehead... sound right?

What's most interesting is that it allows easy 3 monitor Surround Gaming on GFX cards other than Matrox, so giving high performance in current games. And this is oficially supported by Matrox: http://matrox.com/graphics/offhome/th2go/gaming/home.cfm
