I have a nice Compaq laptop with a great screen. If I get an external monitor and plug it in, is there a way to use it as dual monitors?

Yes, you can. Windows has its own built-in multi monitor support, albeit not as extensible as Ultramon.
After you plug your 2nd monitor, go to display property->advanced. Enable second monitor, and set it so you can span your monitor over the two screens. You're get to go.
