Presently using two dual monitor graphics workstations, main use 2/3D CAD, some Draw & Photoshop, usual resolution 1280x1024, somtimes 1600x1200

PC1: AGP+PCI Elsa Synergy2 (TNT2?) w2k
PC2:2x PCI elderly V. slow Matrox Mystique w98se

Problem is, the Elsas, (almost$300 in UK)produce a picture that is much softer than the $70 matrox, even @ 1280x1024 with the slowest refresh I can tolerate, 75Hz. Any reccomendations for nice sharp cards for 2/3D design work, Please?

Matrox always had a nice 2D, but for 3D... it sucks... what proggy do you use in 3d ?

You'll find it pretty tough to find a card that will rival a Matrox in 2D at higher resolutions. The best Matrox would be the G400Max, but they can be hard to come by these days. I label this as the best purely because it has the fastest 3D, the G450 (and new 550) have their advantages as well. The 3D on the Max is pretty good (matches a PCI Geforce2Mx on software that doesn't need T&L). If you want good 2D and respectable 3D, you may want to check out the ATI Radeon - apparently the W2k drivers are a little buggy though.

If games are not a concern, a Matrox is really the only way to go. The G550 will be released soon, but doesn't offer anything truly useful over the G400/450.

What do I use it for?

I use TurboCAD for 2/3D design work, including (say)3D renders of items of furniture in room settings. I chose the Elsas purely because at the time the matrox dual head drivers couldn't replicate win98 dual monitor action, and the Elsa was the only card available in both AGP and PCI versions.

Thanks for your interest and coments
