Ok, I recently purchased a 42" 1080p tv/monitor (sold as a tv, but no internal tuner)

I'm very new to this, but I have since hooked up my xbox, HD cable box, and HD--DVD and surround sound. My last problem is my laptop.
I recently connected my Alienware 7700 (laptop) with an NVIDIA geforce go 6800 to it (via DVI-D). After much tweaking, I've been able to show it at 1920X1080 resolution (but not 1080p supposedly, as per the software, but I'm not sure how that's possible). After many restarts, and some crashing, I've accepted this (after all, it looks great.)
The problem I have is that any time I run games or video, the screen will either go black (games) or grey (video). It shows correctly on the laptop display, however. I have attempted to change game settings to resolutions supported by the monitor/tv, but to no avail. I've updated all my drivers. I've attempted to change resolution. What are my next steps?
