I have a geforce 6600 pci-e card which has dual dvi slots, I have 2 monitors but one is vga so I just need an adapter, but when I plug the dvi monitor into the other dvi slot it doesn't work, is this just because it's a secondary one and will only work once I have my other monitor in the dvi adapter?
Also can you plug in 2 mice and use one for one screen one for the other?

You should be able to use the secondary monitor port right now. You just have to make sure the display adapter is installed correctly. Then go to display properties and check the "extend my desktop to this monitor" box to activate the second monitor.
As for the one mouse for each screen. The answer is no, you can't have two. There have been some really crappy programs that have tried for two in the past that don't really work. Although I made a post just below this one about a new software product MS is supposedly making which would allow for this. So who knows maybe you'll get lucky and MS will offer this in the near future, currently there is no way of doing it though.
