Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Vista won't remember display settings anymore

Hi,

I'm using ultramon 3.0 beta1 on Vista Premium. I'm using a ASUS 8600GT Video card. It worked perfectly for a while. I mainly use it to switch between my CRT and TV.

Then after I tried to set some app to a specific resolution (800 x 600): Vista lost it. To go short: Whenever I restart my system it will startup in 640x480 resolution. No matter what setting I apply, after restart it simply starts in 640x480.

I found out the following trick: Log on first time into my (any) account-> 640x480 ->switch user -> switch back to my account: display setting restored!! (Meaning my original resolution)

I tried several things: Update to newest forceware driver, uninstalled/installed ultramon, disabled TMM task service, used powerstrip to generate monitor drivers...

Is there any thing I can do about this? It's unworkable this way. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know what would cause this, but as a workaround you could set up an UltraMon display profile which gets applied automatically after login.

You can do this via UltraMon menu > Display Profiles.

Thanks for the quick reaction! I also tried that: Is there a way to delay the restore position command?

Now the positions are restored but because the resolution is still 640x480 at that time: the restore will fail. Once the correct automatic restore of resolution is applied and I manually restore the desktop icons it works.

Maybe it's possible to call the restore icons from a batch or so? And put a delay before that?

I've noticed that other people have experienced this problem with UM 2.71. There you answered it was an incompatibility issue with the mirroring feature. I don't see this feature in 3.0 anymore so there's nothing to disable here. Can it be that I installed 2.71 first and then installed 3.0 over it with uninstalling 2.71? How can I check this? Anything I can remove manually from the registry?

Thanks,
Fifi

This is a different issue, with the mirroring compatibility issue you wouldn't be able to change to a different resolution at all, the mirroring feature also can't get installed successfully on Vista.

Can the display profile successfully change the resolution? What if you apply it manually via UltraMon menu > Display Profiles?

I tried both. Both can change the resolution. But when I logout or restart the setting is lost. Like I said before: When I do a switch user and back then suddenly it remembers all display settings (it also recognizes the 2nd monitor again then)

There's no way to check, but this wouldn't be a problem, the mirroring feature can't be installed successfully on Vista, you would get an error during installation.

If the display profile can change the resolution, you could configure it to get applied automatically after login, to do this select Display Profiles > Manage Display Profiles from the UltraMon menu, right-click the display profile and select Edit from the menu, then select the Links tab and check the option 'apply this display profile when logging in'.

Yes I'm already also using this. But as I indicated before:

"...Is there a way to delay the restore position command?

You could do this with the ApplyProfileAndRestoreIcons script.

To have the script run automatically after login, create a shortcut to it and move the shortcut to Start Menu > Programs > Startup. You can then delete the shortcut to the display profile from there.

Thanks! I modified it a bit by using some code from 'ApplyProfileAndRestoreIcons'. I needed the restore of the icons.

Still hope to find out the real problem of course.
