Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Smart Taskbar on same monitor as Windows taskbar

At the moment, I have the Windows taskbar on the left side of my left monitor, along with the system tray, clock, and a few dozen icons. I put all the other icons over there so I can actually use them, rather than them be on the Desktop and covered by windows I have open. Since theres no room left on the Windows bar, I use three Smart Taskbars on my monitors to take care of tasks.

I installed beta1 when it came out, only to find it didn't support this. At the time, I figured it did support it, but there was no way to tell Ultramon to create a new taskbar, so there was no way to get one onto my left monitor. I reverted back to 2.7.1.

When beta2 came out yesterday, I installed it, and found it still didn't have that capability. This time, I went into the registry, and tried manually creating a taskbar on that monitor, but to no avail.

I went onto the forums to see if anyone else had a solution to this. While I found several threads attempting this, I also found that this functionality was intentionally left out, and there is no intention to add it in.

Is there any reason for this loss of functionality? Did Vista change the operation of tasks in such a way that this is hard to do? The current version of Ultramon performs this just fine. I've used Litestep in the past, and while it isn't even designed to run at the same time as explorer, and its task plugins don't have any problem stealing tasks from the Windows task bar if it is running.

Currently I have no plans to add support for this again. Couldn't you just increase the size of the main taskbar to make room for the tasks?

The start button is in the top left, the systray is in the bottom left, and the tasks are along the bottom of the screen. Since Windows will not allow you to separate the taskbar from the primary bar, there is no way to do this with explorer alone.

If Vista changed something with how the tasks are managed, or if 3.0 was rewritten in some way that made it difficult to do this, I would accept that answer, and rearrange my desktop. I just don't understand why 3.0 would lose an ability that 2.7 had.

Thanks for the information.

UltraMon 3 configures the taskbar automatically, for example if you move the main taskbar to a different monitor, the UltraMon taskbar will get moved as well.

At the moment manual configuration like in UltraMon 2 is not supported, but any feedback will be considered for future releases.

I would also like to see this feature brought back to the program. I may keep using v2.7 with vista (despite the incompatibility issues) just for this feature. It allows me to set the windows taskbar to auto hide and place it at the top of a monitor and use two ultramon taskbars for a much more clean look.

I would also REALLY like this feature brought back.

I considered one of Ultramon's best features to be the ability to have the windows taskbar at the top of the screen (with almost the entire length used for "quick launch" or whatever), and have the full width of both monitors for open windows at the bottom of the screens.

I've just upgraded to 3.0.5, and while the extra reliability is great, I think I'll be reverting to an older version.

Please bring it back!

An "make-do" solution to my issue:

I've just found out that vista allows you to make folders into toolbars (drag a folder to the top of your screen and drop it).

Then right click on the toolbar and change it to your quick-links toolbar. Also set it to auto-hide, perhaps...

That way you can remove your quick links from your windows toolbar, which can be kept at the bottom of the screen.

OK, so this doesn't deal with the start menu and the systray, but it at least frees up enough space fit some windows on.

It will do... but I still want the Ultramon functionality to be brought back!!
