One of the spiffiest new features with XP is an integrated virtual desktop manager powertoy. However, this toy sets the wallpaper on each desktop separately with it's own manager, removing any settings you have with the ultramon desktop settings.

To try it out on XP install the powertoys from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp then right-click on the taskbar and choose Toolbars>Desktop Manager. Then pull up the new desktop settings by right-clicking in the new desktop manager section and choosing Configure Desktop Images. It lets you have a different wallpaper for each of your virtual desktops.

I have no idea how you can make it so we can use Ultramon's desktop image manager thingey with this, but it has to store these images in the registry somewhere.

Using UltraMon wallpapers with MSVDM:

1) open the UltraMon wallpaper dialog
2) click 'New wallpaper' to create a new wallpaper with the desired background and images
3) apply the wallpaper
4) repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have a wallpaper for each desktop
5) select Configure Desktop Images from the MSVDM menu
6) select a desktop, click Browse, go to My Documents\My Wallpapers, and select the wallpaper you want to use on that desktop
7) set position to Tile
8) repeat steps 6 and 7 for each desktop

I'll consider adding MSVDM support directly to the UltraMon wallpaper dialog in one of the next releases.

BTW, MSVDM wallpaper settings are stored under the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Powertoys for XP\MSVDM

I have Win XP machine with two monitors each on differed video cards (ATI All-in-wonder 128 PCI and a Radeon VE AGP). I am able to control the center/tile/stretch properties for each monitor, but I am not able to set different wallpapers for each. Any Idea why?

This should work fine, to assign an image to a monitor, select the monitor, then click the Browse button and select the desired image.

I'm still experiencing a bug where, after restarting, MSVDM forgets the settings of all desktop papers except for desktop 1 - all other desktops revert to desktop 1's setttings - but when a window is dragged across the screen it 'erases' the desktop image, revealing the underlying screen color.

I can send you my VSDM reg key if you think this would be helpful.

Check if the correct bitmaps are set for Wallpaper0 - Wallpaper3. Also make sure that all WallpaperPosition values are set to 2 (this is Tile).

Yes, I have it set that way. The paths to the wallpaper and the paths listed in regedit are the same.

To add to the mystery - now desktop 1 and 4 function as they should but 2 and 3 are wonky. I can't see any substantial difference between any of them - all desktops use a .bmp for an image - they were all 'created' in Ultramon in the first step of your instructions. Whereas desktop 1 and 4 can change and show any paper - 2 and 3 show no changes at all with the same papers selected.

Hmm, now they work! I am mystified - but rest assured ,it is surely something I am doing wrong. Best leave your programming talents to more pressing concerns ;)

Thanks,

I noticed that for some reason when u strech certain pictures those pictures they tend to get very blurry. I also noticed that when u stretch the same pictures using windows display properties they look fine. Why is it that Ultramon distorts smaller wallpapers when u stretch them?? is it possible to fix that bug?
Christian Studer   2001-12-14 22:47
If you stretch a small picture across the whole desktop instead of only a single monitor, image quality will be reduced.

Try creating a wallpaper with a different background on each monitor, then stretch the picture to fill a single monitor: image quality should be the same as when using the same image with Windows desktop properties.
