Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Configuration lost after re-boot with monitor unplugged

We have a 3 monitor setup on a system that's sent to tradeshows and assembled by tradeshow staff. What occasionally happens is that they don't plug a monitor in properly before booting. After that, everthing goes downhill!

If they shut down and re-boot, the primary monitor is no longer the same; the task bar and icons are no longer in the same place, etc.

How do we make it so that if the system is set up properly (call it the "factory setting"), but then the system is booted with one or more monitors unplugged; then it's shut down; then all the monitors all plugged in; then it's re-booted, that everything is restored to the "factory setting"? It has to be automatic. An exhibit starts when the computer boots, so it's comparatively complicated to shut the exhibit down and re-set everything.

Just getting the primary monitor correct; the task bar on the right monitor; and the desktop icons in the correct place would be major progress.

In some cases, the computer has re-numbered the monitors, which really throws a wrench into things. The applications involved use 3D graphics and have multiple windows, so it's very important to make sure they're running on the monitors driven by the high performance graphics card (they choose on which display to appear based upon the monitor number)

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

An UltraMon display profile might help, but if the monitor numbers get changed as well, the profile will no longer work correctly.

To prevent the monitor numbers from getting changed, you would need to make sure to connect each monitor to the same video card port when setting up the system.

Let's say the monitor numbers don't change.

When I tried it out with UltraMon (i.e. set the sytsem up correctly and shut down; unplugged a monitor & booted; then shut down and plugged the monitor back in; then booted again), UltraMon didn't reset/restore which monitor was primary, and where the taskbar and icons were in the first place. How do I set UltraMon up to reset all those?

Thanks,
Mike

Display settings can be set via display profile, icon positions get saved/restored automatically during UltraMon startup/shutdown, the Windows taskbar could get moved with the ApplyProfileAndMoveWinTbar script.
