I have used multiple monitors for about 6 years now. One of them just died.
In purchasing a new monitor, I have been wooed by a large 28" monitor.
Is there any way to partition a single monitor to act like two?

Yes. For example, NVidia lets you divide the screen or screens up however you want. If your brand card doesn't include such a feature there are 3rd party apps that will split up a screen.

SplitView lets you treat a hi-res widescreen monitor like two (or more) monitors. See http://www.splitview.com/SplitView-Personal-Edition
