How do you know if you should install 32 or 64 bit version of ultramon? I am using a sony laptop with windows vista that I like to hook up to a larger monitor.

Most people have 32-bit Windows installed and need the 32-bit version of UltraMon.
To check which version you have, go to Control Panel > System and check the system type.
