Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Crash: TaskBand.cpp (701)

Hi, I got this crash after clicking on a taskbar item in the Smart Taskbar. It has happened several times recently:

-------------------
Ultramon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit.

Source file: .\TaskBand.cpp
Line: 701
Return value: 0
Last error: 0
-------------------

I'm running UltraMon 3.0.2 in Windows XP.

Thanks!

Does this happen after the system or application has become unresponsive temporarily? If yes, the issue should be fixed in the next release.

I don't think it's after the system has become unresponsive, but that may be the case, I'll keep a better eye on it.

What specifically do you mean by the application or system becoming unresponsive temporarily?

I often times do have full CPU usage on all 4 cores but I don't recall ever noticing my mouse movement being temporarily haulted due to heavy system usage.

Usually the mouse will still work, but one or more applications may no longer respond, for example if you click on a button/menu nothing happens.

BTW, do you have Taskbar Shuffle installed? Another user just reported the same error, and he also had Taskbar Shuffle installed (latest version compatible with UltraMon).

I too have this problem (Vista x86; once or twice most days, usually because WinSCP sometimes goes unresponsive while it tries to connect to a server), and I do have Taskbar Shuffle installed. Perhaps I'll try disabling it & see if it keeps happening.

Any kind of ETA on that next release?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, I do have Taskbar Shuffle installed.

3.0 Beta 3 should be ready later this quarter.

I'll also do some testing with Taskbar Shuffle on my end.

Same error here with the latest Ultramon and Taskbar Shuffle.

I don't have taskbar shuffle installed and I'm pretty sure this is error line I saw. Vista 32bit sp1. There were two Process Explorer taskbar buttons on monitor 4 (only one process running though). I closed PE, noticed the other button still there, clicked on it, and 701 (pretty sure) crash.

In my case, I also noticed that sometimes there will be two task bar buttons for the same window (e.g., I may have Foxit, Firefox, IE7, and Word open. Each will have one task bar button, except for one of them -- which will have two buttons.). When I click on one of the two buttons for the same window, the task bar crashes. This seems to happen once or twice a day. There does not seem to be any pattern to it -- it has happened one or more times with IE, Word, and Foxit.

I'm using Vista Home Premium x86 with SP1.

Here's what the dialog box said when Ultramon crashed just now:

Ultramon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit.

More information:

Source file: .\TaskBand.cpp
Line: 710
Return value: 0
Last error: 1400

In that last message describing the error dialog box, that's on Vista Home Premium x86.

I too see this problem with some frequency, always it happens when clicking on a window that no longer exists. (OS is Windows Server 2008 x64).

Most typical repro is to start up some program (say Outlook), kill if from a console window using 'kill -f outlook', the process goes away but UltraMon does seem to notice. UltraMon is happy until I click on that bogus entry.

Once I re-start UltraMon it does not show the smart taskbar, but if I close it gracefully & restart again it works OK.

In my post above it sould read that UltraMon does NOT notice when I kill Outlook.

I see this error at least 5 or 6 times a day, but probably more like 15-20 times a day. I am also using 32bit Vista sp1. It's been much more frequent lately, and I feel like it might have something to do with google talk. It seems like google talk taskbar entries end up getting duplicated like one is frozen and then I will see the error if I click on the frozen one. Hopefully that helps.

It seems to happen to me once a day -- I don't recall if it has happened more than twice on the same day. It happened again today -- soon after booting my PC. Same error message as the one I posted yesterday.

If I quit Ultramon (using the Close menu item) and then re-start it, the smart task bar comes back. It hasn't crashed again since the first crash this morning.

I don't remember what app caused it to crash today, but I don't have Google Talk or that shuffle app installed. I haven't been able to link this behavior to any specific application on my laptop. It has crashed in this manner at different times when clicking on IE7, Word, and Foxit buttons. I always notice (too late) that the program that "causes" the crash has two buttons displayed in the task bar just prior to the crash.

Here is a screenshot of what I was referring to above with the multiple Google talk taskbar entries (http://vjg.cc/smartTaskbar.jpg). I blocked out the names, but when everything is functioning correctly, there is only one entry, but if you look at it now while it is failing, there are 3 entries. Of those three entries that show in my smart taskbar, 2 of those windows have been closed for a while now but the entries still show up. When I click on one of the two that aren't supposed to be there, it will give me the error everyone is getting. The weirdest part about it is (in case you don't know Google talk) when there are multiple Google talk windows open, and everything is functioning properly, there should still only be 1 Google talk taskbar entry. They do not group together like windows taskbar entry grouping, it just displays the active one in the taskbar.

For the person who closes and re-opens Ultramon, what you can do instead is right click on the system tray icon and go to 'Smart Taskbar' -> Enable (see screenshot http://vjg.cc/smartTaskbarQuickFix.jpg)

Hope this helps.
