I have an external monitor connected on the left side of my lap top. Whenever I close the lid, my lap top display switches to the external monitor, yet when I reopen the lid, the direction of the extended display shifts back to the right side. Is it possible to change that in the settings?

That's probably an issue with Windows or the display driver.
If you have UltraMon installed you could create a display profile which restores the original configuration, you would still need to apply the profile manually though.
