I upgraded my Vista 64bit to the CTP version of Windows 7 64bit and everything seems to work except UltraMon!

Is there any plan to release a beta which supports Win 7 or is it a big ask?

what seems to not be working for you? It runs fine for me on win7 x 64 (build 7077).

I hope the OP doesn't mind me jumping in here but I just installed Windows 7 RC1 (build 7100) and Ultramon kept crashing. I tried to run it in various versions of Vista compatibility mode with no luck.

I know this doesn't provide any specifics. I will reinstall to test and provide the specific errors I have received.

On a side not - I fail to see why Microsoft hasn't built Ultramon type features into its OS. It pisses me off that I cannot simply use one wallpaper for two screens.

I'm going to look into Windows 7 support for the 3.0.6 release.

Disabling the window buttons in the registry will allow you to use UltraMon, to do this run regedit.exe, go to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Realtime Soft\UltraMon\<version>\Window Buttons', then change the value of 'Maximize to Desktop Button' and 'Move Window Button' from one to zero.

There are 0 crashes after the regedit fix. Pass it on.

Most people are unaware that Microsoft did in fact put multimon taskbars into Windows, but this was removed at the Longhorn reset around 2005. Never made it into Vista, and the total taskbar redesign in Windows 7 pushed this back again.

There was a post on the Engineering 7 blog about multimon a few months back. You should read the comments -- people were pretty furious about not having a multimon taskbar. And other parts of Windows, such as Remote Desktop, are now more multimon-friendly.

In other words, people within Microsoft are aware of the need for multimon-friendliness. The problem is: If Microsoft does it, then people expect it to work 99.99%. Even though they already have code that was written five years ago, they can't just put it into Windows. They have to do 100 times as much testing as a third-party developer can get away with.

Send in feedback! If there's enough demand, then maybe it'll make it into Windows 8.
