Alright, I'm trying to pick out a shield to use. It's my first time so I thought I would consult with everyone here. My big question is, is a lighter shield really worth the trade offs in protection? I’m wondering if the agility makes up for it or not. If I go with a lighter version, what should I be aware of? I'd love to hear all sides of this equation.

It really just depends on your general strategy and preferred style! A lighter shield allows for improved maneuverability, which can be invaluable in duels or group fights, and might be worth it. However, a heavier shield offers better protection. Before you think about anything else, search all of the quality medieval shields that work best within your budget. I would consult with the people from Medieval Extreme to find what you should do.

Considering the trade-offs between shield weight and protection, it's interesting to keep in mind the tactical decisions made throughout history with warfare and personal combat. Different cultures and eras have favoured different ratios of protection to speed. Some strategies might favor simply standing your ground. Other cultures may prefer superior speed.
