Hi,
i use the following system for trading equities and have encountered a strange bug:
- Win XP SP2 - P4 3.2 GhZ Prescott - 2 GB RAM - 4x Matrox G450 MMS Quad - 1x Matrox G550 Dual - latest drivers
17 screens are connected to my computer. If 16 screens are activated everything works fine, but as soon as I activate the 17th, CPU usage surges to 35% (from a few percentage points), stays there and the whole system gets slow. In addition, Ultramon gives back an error report, I am supposed to send - here are my screenshots:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/vwdservice/1.gif http://mitglied.lycos.de/vwdservice/2.gif
The error file, Windows wants me to send in contains the following information:
if I deactivate the 17th screen, back to a 16 screens setup, CPU usage goes way back to almost zero and everything works just as fine as before.
I'm far from being an IT Pro, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot, Luke

Please try if disabling the desktop wallpaper fixes the problem.
To do this, select Wallpaper from the UltraMon menu, and select (None) as the active wallpaper.

maybe I should add that other then in other cases of error reports, the affected program (Ultramon)is _not_ shutting down (no matter if there is a wallpaper or not) - after sending or not sending the error report, I can use Ultramon further on, but as long as the 17th screen is activated I get the error report each time I start Ultramon
can you tell me what this is all about? has it something to do with Service Pack 2 and the altered gdiplus.dll file?
thanks a lot, Luke

It's actually the UltraMon wallpaper manager, UltraMonDesktop.exe, which crashes, not UltraMon itself.
The crash happens in gdiplus.dll, for some reason GDI+ seems to have a problem when the 17th monitor is enabled. I don't know if this is only an issue with the SP2 version or if earlier versions of the DLL have the same problem as well.
To prevent UltraMon from starting UltraMonDesktop.exe, open the wallpaper settings, then select the Options tab and uncheck the 'adjust wallpaper when display configuration changes' checkbox.
BTW, can you actually open the wallpaper settings with the 17th monitor enabled, or does UltraMonDesktop.exe crash?

"BTW, can you actually open the wallpaper settings with the 17th monitor enabled, or does UltraMonDesktop.exe crash?"
well, both - I can change all these wallpaper settings, but I'm still getting the error report (which isnt once more resulting in a shutdown or similar action)
as soon as I apply _my_ wallpaper back on all 17 screens, cpu usage surges again and the system is slow..
unchecking the 'automatisch anpassen' box helps a lot, as i dont get any error report when activating the 17th screen; but if I select the wallpaper settings from Ultramon's drop down menue, Ultramondesktop.exe-error report shows up again, even with an unchecked box...
should I try to overwrite the due to SP2 altered gdiplus.dll (version 5.1.3102.2180) with another one (5.1.3097.0 or 6.0.3264.0) for instance?

I have now been able to reproduce the problem, with a 17th monitor enabled, the wallpaper manager crashes in gdiplus.dll when you close it.
It's definitely an issue with GDI+, here's more technical information in case you want to contact Microsoft Support:
Calling GdiplusShutdown causes an access violation reading location 0x6d426431, crash address 0x4ed59d45, gdiplus.dll load address 0x4ec50000.
Replacing gdiplus.dll with version 6.0.4074.0 (from Windows Longhorn build 4074) does fix the problem, but I don't know if this version is affected by the JPEG security issue or not.
As a workaround, the next release of UltraMon will suppress the crash message, the problem itself can't be fixed in UltraMon though.

have you tried other versions (5.1.3097.0 or 6.0.3264.0) of gdiplus.dll too? result?
I guess 5.1.3097.0 is the jpeg bug-version, but I actually dont know what 6.0.3264.0 does. I got gidplus.dll at four locations in three different versions on my system..

I haven't tested with any other version.

Luke 2004-10-03 04:52
ok, then can you please send me the longhorn version of gdiplus.dll, derLuke@gmx.net? do you already know if this one is jpeg bug free or affected?
anyway, please update this thread if you gather any news concerning this problem..
thanks a lot for your quick and precise support, Luke

The Longhorn version isn't redistributable as far as I know, you would need to get this from a Longhorn install yourself.
The 6.0.3264.0 version that you already have is most likely from Longhorn as well though.
I don't know if version 6 of GDI+ is also affected by the JPEG security issue, for this reason I would recommend sticking with the 5.1.3102.2180 version.
The UltraMon wallpaper manager will still work fine, even though you get the error message when you close it.

yes but i wont be able to apply any wallpapers
|
Christian Studer 2004-10-03 23:46
Applying wallpapers still works fine for me, the crash occurs after the wallpaper has been applied.

if I do set any wallpaper with 17 screens alive, system is back into unstable conditions (cpu usage..)
I can only work with 17 screens if no wallpaper is set
|
Christian Studer 2004-10-04 03:39
That's probably not related to UltraMon, you could try if you have the same problem when applying the wallpaper manually.
To do this, open Display Properties, select the Desktop tab, click on Browse, then go to My Documents\My Wallpapers and select your wallpaper. Make sure Position is set to Tile before applying the new settings.
To check what process is using up 35% CPU, open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and take a look at the Processes tab. The CPU column shows CPU usage in percent.

rundll32.exe is causing the error report, leaving 'explorer.exe' and 'system' back with high cpu usage

Most likely the shell (explorer.exe) has problems with the large wallpaper, keep in mind that Windows 2000/XP only support 10 monitors officially.
I've seen similar weird issues on my test system, for example when booting with more than 15 monitors enabled, the system crashes before it gets to the login screen. But if I boot with only 15 monitors enabled, and then enable the additional monitors after logging in, it works fine.

so after all I guess applying no wallpaper at all is the very best way to handle multimonitor troubles..
only thing left thats bothering when no wallpaper is applied and 17 screens are enabled is the ultramondesktop.exe error report, an issue I can live along with..
I give you an update if everything still works fine with 22 screens, when my new G450 Quad has arrived..

hey Christian,
ok, its becoming really strange this time :)
I got my new G450 MMS Quad card today, so I uninstalled all matrox drivers, removed the G550 Dual card (I thought maybe troubles are caused by mixing a G550 AGP card with G450 PCI cards) and booted the system with 5 (five) G450 MMS Quad PCI cards, resulting in 20 displays. Leaving all other settings unchanged (eg. no wallpaper is active).
After installing the latest driver for the graphic cards, everything worked fine, even as I activated the mysterious 17th screen. This time, I got an error report when I activated the 19th screen :) - and: its 'explorer.exe' this time, which is affected by the error report. Here's the content of the error message:

which leaves me with an open mouth, dumb looking - any idea what the heck this is all about?

Unfortunately I don't know what causes this, but I've seen similar issues myself, even kernel crashes.
Maybe the system is running out of some type of resource (kernel memory?), which causes a variety of problems. Maybe the driver for the G450 requires less resources, that's why you can successfully add more monitors.
These are just wild guesses though. You'll probably get no answer from Microsoft and Matrox either though, as they don't support more than 10 monitors officially.

running out of memory? I got 2 GB RAM...
|
Luke 2004-11-06 08:29
as Matrox has released brand new driver for the G450 Quad MMS card, I retested multimonitor configurations using UltraMon - setup was as follows:
- Win XP SP2 - P4 3.2 GhZ Prescott - 2 GB RAM - 5x Matrox G450 MMS Quad
unfortunately, the problem persists - 18 screens work absolutely fine, but as soon as the 19th gets activated I got
- an explorer.exe error message - the taskbar disappears - keyboard commands won't work anymore
same symptoms I've experienced with the old matrox driver already, so no progress has been archieved
questions left:
- Was anybody ever able to use more than 18 screens with a single windows computer? I wonder what setup he or she was using? What kind of multimonitor graphic cards?
- Christian, as you suggested that maybe the system is running out of kernel memory when activating the 19th screen => is there any possibility to check if this is the case? I'm unfamiliar with procedures like this... - I guess my total of 2 GB RAM has nothing to do with that?
Thanks a lot, Luke

of course, no wallpaper was applied during the test

I don't know how you could check this, but anyway this was just a guess, might also be something completely different.
