Any news on a date?
Christian Studer   2004-12-20 03:21
Unfortunately it's been delayed further, I'm currently working on 64-bit support for UltraMon 2.

If all goes as planned, 3.0 Beta 1 will be the next release after 2.6.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Nameless One   2004-12-22 02:24
So version 2.6 is just Ultramon with 64bit support? Anyway, keep up the good work.
Christian Studer   2004-12-22 02:32
Yes, plus bug fixes.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Carp   2005-03-16 05:22
Well, it seems like a 'little' delay has turned into a very big delay. Months even....

Any updates on a release date?
Christian Studer   2005-04-18 09:57
Not at this time, development on 3.0 Beta 1 is on hold until 2.6 has been released.

2.6 was released..

Is 3.0 beta being worked on yet?
Christian Studer   2005-08-02 02:05
I have resumed working on 3.0 Beta 1, but don't have a release date yet.

I am now running Windows Vista and will be from this point onwards as I am trialing it so I can train users when it finally arrives.
I have used UltraMon for the last two years and now simply cannot do without it - my dilemma is that the new Aero theme has larger buttons on the Windows TitleBar than XP and so it overlapps your buttons making it unusable :(

Can I request an update for the Aero theme now that Mircosoft has pretty much set the UI in stone (Well at least the bits that will effect UltraMon are).
I realise this will probably mean a rewrite in the new WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation - or Avalon) to achieve the glass effect for the buttons and taskbar - however my understanding is that all the APIs and such are currently well documented so it shouldn't be as bad as it sounds.

I would *REALLY* appriciate this - as I expect would many others who if not using Vista already - will be by the time you have updated it.

As a workaround until this happens - is there a way to disable the Windows Title buttons but keep the SmartTaskBar - this would solve my issue on the tempoary basis.

Many Thanks
Christian Studer   2005-10-06 10:23
You can disable the UltraMon window buttons under UltraMon Options > Window Title Bar.

I'm going to start working on Vista compatibility once Beta 2 has been released, current plans are to add support for Vista in UltraMon 3.

is it possible, to make ultramon 3.0 work with windows blinds 5?

Im using windows Blinds 5, and it doesn't copy transperancy, and doesn't take on the font styles either.

thanks
Christian Studer   2005-12-04 23:10
Most likely the UltraMon 3 taskbar will have support for WindowBlinds skinning, I haven't tested this yet though.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Joakim Bergqvist   2005-12-05 01:20
Good that the 3.0 will support Windowblinds 5 (i hope?). But I have read trough the forum and in december 2004 you started talking about UltraMon 3, shouldnt it be here soon?

If you have it in beta stage i sure could try out if it works with Windowblinds 5, just email me to the adress i filled in above!

Hoping for a release with WB 5 support soon :)
Christian Studer   2005-12-05 09:35
Betas will be public, the first one is currently under development, but I don't have a release date yet.

You have any idea yet when this beta 3 will be out with Windowblinds 5 support i hope :) ?

It would be damn nice if this product will be able in a few months atleast?

I don't have any new information at the moment.

Hi,

I have been an avid user of UltraMon for a long time now. I absolutely love it!

May I make a few suggestions for your next release?

In the Windows XP taskbar, if you have a lot of windows crowding it up, it groups the same applications into a list from which you can still access on the taskbar. I'm sure you have seen this happen before.

I noticed that UltraMon could not do that, and was surprised. I was wondering if you could incorporate this feature into your next release.

My last suggestion is that you add animation to the SmartTaskbar to make it more like the Windows XP taskbar. The animation occurs when you open a new application window, and again I'm sure you've seen this before. Of course, this suggestion is just fancy, you do not have to incorporate it.

Thanks!!

Bryce
Christian Studer   2006-02-13 09:56
Thanks for your suggestions, will be considered for UltraMon 3.

Sorry to be a pest...any ballpark ETA on a beta? I'm running the Feb CTP of Vista with dual monitors and it would be awesome to be able to use UltraMon.
Christian Studer   2006-03-01 00:00
Unfortunately it's too early for a solid estimate.

Most UltraMon features should work more or less fine with Vista, except for mirroring and the window buttons.

The window buttons will work fine though if your system doesn't use the high-end visual style with transparency.

I have Vista RC1 (RC is above Beta, right?). And I've seen posted that Ultramon 3.0 beta would be released before or by Vista Beta 1.

Just wondering what the status is on this.
Christian Studer   2006-09-14 08:50
I hope to have the first 3.0 beta ready in time for the Vista release early next year.

Not sure about the community but I for one would much prefer a Vista compatible Ultramon than Ultramon3 with all its extra 'features'.

Is it these features and the desire to move to Ultramon3 codebase slowing the project or is it technical problems moving to Vista?

I only ask as I see a continual slip of Ultramon3... :(
Christian Studer   2006-09-18 10:18
Most features should work fine on Vista, but I'm not sure yet about the window buttons, and mirroring will need to be completely redesigned.

Vista support does require some major changes though, that's the main reason that it will be introduced in 3.0 and not in a 2.x release. It's possible though that full or partial Vista support will also be added in a future 2.x release.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Nitemare   2006-09-18 18:54
i'm running vista and i've tryed to install ultramon, but its not loading the drivers, PLEASE atleast release a compatable version
Christian Studer   2006-09-19 09:15
To install UltraMon on Vista, deselect the mirroring feature on the Customize Installation screen of the setup.

The mirroring feature isn't compatible with Vista.

"Vista support does require some major changes though, that's the main reason that it will be introduced in 3.0 and not in a 2.x release. It's possible though that full or partial Vista support will also be added in a future 2.x release."

This makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever. Why would you incorporate Vista support into 2.x after 3 has been delievered.

*confused*

Hope when Visa ships you will have a version ready with a working taskbar - the only feature that HAS to work for the software to be usable. Bugs in mirroring and button placement etc can be lived with, a unusable bar cannot...
Cool Matty   2006-09-22 05:14
I concur. These things are the only serious problems with Ultramon:

1. Black text in second toolbar.
2. Extra buttons are invisible (but they work! Hell, I have the placement memorized, so it doesn't even bother me)
3. The multiple wallpaper thing doesn't work. (It seems that Vista screwed with how dual monitor backgrounds work. This may even be a Vista bug at this point. In any case, the wallpaper generated has to be REVERSED. The wallpaper to appear on the right monitor must be placed on the left side of the background, and vice versa.)

If those things were fixed, I'd be perfectly happy with this already excellent product.
Mike C   2006-09-25 02:11
Suppose you've been foolish enough to install Ultramon 2.6 into Vista RC1 forgetting to deselect DisplayMirror - is there now any way to get rid of the darned thing? Everytime I restart or log into my PC it now prompts me to install the DisplayMirror drive, which of course it can't do. I can't uninstall it or disable it in Device Manager, as I get an error. I can't even delete the registry keys to try and get rid of it, as I get an access denied error (which I also get if I try to take administrative ownership so I can reset the reg permissions).

Any ideas?
Christian Studer   2006-09-25 03:17
Did you already try my workaround from this thread?

I tested this on an earlier release though and don't know if it still works with RC1.

Michael M.   2006-10-03 00:17
Hi, just wondering if you'll have a cross-monitor function supporting full-screen games on one screen in the next beta (as suggested in a previous thread)?
Christian Studer   2006-10-03 09:08
With support for moving the mouse out of the game and work with an application on the other monitor?

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Michael M.   2006-10-05 18:04
Yeah, that's what I mean.
Christian Studer   2006-10-06 00:45
I'm going to look into this, but don't know yet if it can actually be done. It also certainly wouldn't make it into the first beta.

Just wanted to add my thanks for developing Ultramon and am looking forward to seeing the v3 beta.

I think Vista tries to be a bit friendlier to multiple monitor users but still doesn't come close to the usability that Ultramon provides.

You're welcome, thanks for the feedback.

Hi Christian,

A quick feature request for Ultramon3: would it be possible for you to have a tickbox or similar which causes Ultramon to require a certain mouse gesture to cross between two monitors?

For instance (and these are the two methods used by Synergy2 - a very different style of multimon program) double tapping the side of the screen within 250ms, or hovering the mouse on the screen border for 250ms, before going across.

I realise you can already lock the cursor within one screen via hot keys, but using such mouse gestures makes life much easier as it can be done single handedly with just a little mouse flick or similar.

Thanks in advance for reading :)
Christian Studer   2006-10-31 08:51
Thanks for the suggestion, this is something I'm going to look into for version 3.

Dan L   2006-11-20 07:55
Any chance we could see support for the Matrox DualHead2Go external box?

This device allows you to connect two monitors to one VGA port, and tells the video card the monitor is twice as wide (eg. two 1280x1024 monitors appear as one 2560 x 1024).

The problem is since Windows (and UltraMon) see this as one monitor, all tasks from the extended taskbar appear on the left monitor.

I guess what I'd really like to see is a way to logically split one monitor into two and have the extended taskbar only show tasks that are on that logical monitor.
Christian Studer   2006-11-20 09:58
Currently I have no plans to add support for the Matrox 2Go.

What I'm considering for UltraMon 3 is support for moving/maximizing windows to certain parts of a monitor. This is intended for use with widescreen monitors, but would of course also work with the 2Go.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Dan L   2006-11-20 10:09
Would that include splitting the taskbar? Your scripts already work well for moving/maximizing windows on really wide displays.

The big thing would be to get the taskbar buttons appearing below the area where the window resides (ie. the "logical" screen).
Christian Studer   2006-11-21 10:35
That won't work, UltraMon can't resize the Windows taskbar.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Andrew A   2007-03-05 10:08
Thanks alot for an excellent product - Whenever I see someone with multiple monitors *not* running Ultramon, I laugh at the work they go through with dragging windows and moving the mouse way too far.

Anyhow, I'm happily awaiting the 3.0 Beta release for Vista. We have screenshot wars fairly consistently on a forum website that I frequent and I just can't wait until I can show off transparency and other Vista effects on both halves.

Keep up the great work.
Sreed   2007-03-10 15:37
Is the 3.0 beta getting close to time for us to try it ? Keep up the good work

The first beta should be ready later this month.

It'd be nice if there was some way to get a start menu on more than one monitor, either that or some way to toggle where the "real" and "fake" taskbars are, with a hotkey or something.

When I run a fullscreen application, i do it on my largest monitor. Since this is the central monitor i like to use it for most things. However, some apps I used (mostly games) take up the full center screen, and it'd be nice if I could press a hotkey to shift the "primary" taskbar over to the other monitor.
Chaim   2007-03-15 08:18
Used the trial version, you really improved my life, thanks!! My co-workers have already downloaded the trial too...can't wait to try/buy the Vista version. You rock!

Ultramon 3 (beta or otherwise) will be the final niggle out of the way for me since updating and running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. For all us users of multiple monitors (and we'll all tend to be what the press would probably call 'high-end users') this has to be the most eagerly anticipted software update for a while - only 10 days of March left to go and I'm away skiing for 7 of them!

AlanC
Anla-shok   2007-03-21 16:59
Just curious, how much will the update cost. As I have to agree, since upgrading to VistaU UltraMon and kavoom.biz's extramon are the two programs I HAVE to have on my systems.
Peter Stark   2007-03-22 02:01
2.7.1. is really Nice software, but I've seem some quirks with it.

Wallpaper - if you change the files that Ultramon looks at, you have to click on the profile, then change the option to spread of different monitors, and then the OK to show the new file. Otherwise clicking on the profile and then the ok, shows the old file version even if the file changed and the preview was correct, what it does is still incorrect. Not sure if 3.0 Beta fixes this, My trial version of 2.7.1 already expired.

Screensavers - if the screensaver supports two monitors, and you choose different screensavers per monitor, selecting OK gives something you don't expect. It's not what Untramon selected, but what Windows did.

2.7.1. is really Nice software as I said - I really like it but I've seem some quirks with it. Not sure if I am going to get 2.7 anyway or wait for 3.0. I guess it boils down to the release dates, or if I can demo a 3.0 version. ;)
Thanks.

help please!!

i can manage to stretch a desktop background over my two screens, but when it comes to running my game likewise, it reverts back to a single screen!

why is this?
Christian Studer   2008-01-17 10:25
Most games will run fullscreen on the primary monitor, UltraMon can't help with this.

What you could do is use the video card's span mode, or run the game in windowed mode if available.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Dimitris   2008-01-18 14:56
I'm running 3.0 Beta 2 with the following setup:

4 monitors, 1 disabled
Current desktop: 5760x1200 (-1920,0 - 3840,1200)

Monitor 1 - Generic PnP Monitor:
Settings: 1920x1200, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 1920,0 - 3840,1200. Workspace: 1920,0 - 3840,1170
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
Device: \\.\DISPLAY1\Monitor0

Monitor 2 - Default Monitor (disabled):
Settings: 800x600, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 1920,0 - 2720,600
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
Device: \\.\DISPLAY2

Monitor 3 - Dell E248WFP(Digital) (primary):
Settings: 1920x1200, 32-bit color, 59 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 0,0 - 1920,1200. Workspace: 0,0 - 1920,1140
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
Device: \\.\DISPLAY3\Monitor0

Monitor 4 - Dell E248WFP(Digital):
Settings: 1920x1200, 32-bit color, 59 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: -1920,0 - 0,1200. Workspace: -1920,0 - 0,1140
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
Device: \\.\DISPLAY4\Monitor0

Sometimes, when the monitors have gone to sleep, I get back to seeing only the mouse pointer and nothing else. I can move the pointer and I can see the pointer change to different things when I move it around, but nothing else happens on the screen. I either have to hard reboot or do a blind Ctrl-Alt-Delete, lock the workstation and then enter my password again to log back on. At this point only one monitor (primary) shows a picture, I am logged on an then the other two monitors light up.

Can this be related to UltraMon or Vista? I'm running Vista 32bit with SP1 RC installed.
Christian Studer   2008-01-19 07:45
Was the system on standby as well, or only the monitors?

If it's only the monitors, my guess would be that this is a display driver or Vista issue. Some users reported similar issues with Vista SP1 RC1, see this thread for details.

Bruce   2008-01-26 12:47
Hello,
I just installed the ultramon 3 beta 2 release. I am unable to find the "Show Tasks From" option for the task bar. This feature is in 2.7.1, and I was curious if someone could point me to it in 3.0, if it is there somewhere. If it's not there, could you tell me if it's going to be re-added later?

Thanks!
Bruce
Christian Studer   2008-01-27 08:56
This option is no longer available, the taskbars are now configured automatically (you'll always have a single taskbar on each monitor, showing tasks from the monitor it is on).

Disabling the taskbar for a monitor is possible, but currently needs to be configured via the registry, see this thread for details.
