Okay, so I read through the forums and I already know the supported method of making a CRT the primary monitor is using the laptop's built-in controls.

That's great, except my laptop (HP N5425 with Trident Cyberblade XP graphics) does not allow this.

I can switch to CRT only, or shared CRT/LCD mirror mode no problem. The problem is as soon as the LCD is enabled it automatically switches the LCD to be primary!

It's really kind of annoying. The same method works fine on my Dell Latitude D800.

So now to my question since I haven't seen it answered anywhere. Why on laptops is the primary monitor option disabled? Is there no way to trick this?

If you know the answer please feel free to be as technical as you like. I am a programmer by trade, but I have no experience in this area.

Lastly, I have an UltraMon feature request which might resolve this issue. How about a feature that auto-moves new windows to the secondary display? Right now after they appear I use a hotkey to move them to the next window. I'd like that to happen automatically, at least for windows spawned by a process that's already on the secondary display.

Thanks for your time. Looks like you have a good product!

Thanks for your suggestion, will be considered for UltraMon 3.

The problem with changing the primary monitor on laptops is that most drivers for laptop video chipsets set a property of the external monitor which prevents it from being set as primary via the regular API for making display setting changes.

If you go to UltraMon menu > About, and it says 'removable' next to a monitor, UltraMon (and Windows) won't be able to set it as the primary monitor.
