Howdy,
I do not see anywhere that Ultramon will actually run on Vista?
If so, please let me know and if not, can we expect to see a version soon please..
Cheers

2.7.1 will install fine on Vista, but not all features are available, and some features may not work correctly. Improved Vista support is planned for the first 3.0 beta, which should be ready early next year.

Thanks, please time it to come out before vista, at least the ability to do smart taskbar!! ultramon is the ONE program i could not live without on a day-to-day basis, or at least it's smart taskbar feature!
|
Christian Studer 2006-11-29 07:54
The Smart Taskbar should already work fine on Vista with the 2.7.1 release, but won't exactly match the Vista look.

As a beta tester I have the RTM Vista. It is now installed, I have gotten amost everything working and so installed UltraMon. At first it seemed fine, but then the task bar on the left monitor moved to the right monitor, so there are now a stack of two task bars on the right monitor. Vista also seems to insist on having the start button on the right monitor, no matter how I change the monitor set-up or even switch the DVI connectors.
|
Christian Studer 2006-12-03 11:11
That's most likely just a configuration issue, see Smart Taskbar: missing taskbar or taskbar shows tasks from wrong monitor for more on changing the Smart Taskbar configuration.

I have to confirm that UltraMon with a monitor on the right works just fine - my start menu is correctly on my monitor on the left.
I'm running the RC1 of Vista.
As for unsupported features - UltraMon's taskbar on my right monitor does not show the Alpha blending the Windows taskbar has. Also, the application "buttons" that appear on the ultramon taskbar do not show a border... looks kind of strange.
Can't wait for 3.0 to come out! And please include task grouping please! :o)

Thanks for the tip. I can now see task bars on my 2nd and 3rd monitor, with some limitations. I use Vista Ultimate Final, Nvidia 7900GTX for Monitor 1 and Nvidia 7300GT for Monitor 2 and 3.
Can't wait for v. 3 to be released.
Keep up the good work ;)

FYI - I have Vista Ultimate RTM with 3 monitors and the smart taskbar is working fine. Can't wait for the 3.0 version... :)
Thanks,

Hello All,
I am running the full, final version of Windows Vista Ultimate. Most of the features for UltraMon are working;although there are a few quirks. Many programs do not show the icon at the top, right corner to switch between monitors. Also, when the screensaver turns on, it is only on one monitor. Those are the only quirks that I have found so far.

Is UltraMon workable on the 64-bit version of Vista?
|
Christian Studer 2007-01-30 10:38
I'm not aware of any issues specific to the 64-bit version, for general information on Vista compatibility see Windows Vista compatibility.

Christian, can we perhaps just have a little date on when we'll see 3.0.. Vista is released now so it would be a good time
|
benb 2007-01-31 07:08
I agree - it would be really great to get a status on v3 now that Vista is out. Near or far, it is always better to have some level of transparency. Last I read, you thought it might be in beta around this time.. The board that was on is now missing so I hope that does not mean things are not going well.

The first beta is scheduled for release this quarter.
Posts from the beta forum are still available, the forum has been merged with the main UltraMon forum.

Just curious. I know 2.7.1 will work on Vista in a limited fashion as I've been using it but I just noticed something strange that I didn't notice before.
The smart taskbar works with almost all apps (i.e. the window moves to the correct taskbar pending what monitor it's on). I noticed that IE7 doesn't seem to work that way! IE7 windows always show on the monitor it opens up on first. If I move the window to the other monitor the taskbar icon doesn't move!
Am I the only one to see this? Maybe some odd configuration in place?
|
Christian Studer 2007-02-01 10:49
I'm seeing this as well, also the buttons and menu commands don't work with IE on Vista.
Works fine with IE7 on XP.

I experienced this also, but like magic when i went into Tools-->Internet Options-->Security and disabled "Protected Mode", I could then get IE7 to work with Ultramon like normal.
|
Richard Berg 2007-02-02 15:40
It's not just IE. Outlook 2007 likes to appear on both taskbars, and its sub-windows (compose email, reminders) occasionally get "stuck" after closing them.
|
Matthew Sawyer 2007-02-04 23:12
I've experienced these issues as well. IE 7 in Vista (I'm currently running RTM) definitely experiences this--move IE from one monitor to the other and its taskbar icon doesn't move with it.
The easiest way to resolve this is to right-click the Smart Taskbar and click Refresh. This will cause a refresh of all taskbars (including the main one) to update.
I have also noticed this pop up occasionally in Windows Explorer. Sometimes if Windows Explorer "hangs" on a long operation (not to where I need to kill it, but where it becomes unusable for a few seconds), its taskbar icon will appear in the Smart Taskbar (if the Windows Explorer window is in a monitor with Smart Taskbar) as well as the main one. So it appears in two places. Again the fix is to right-click the Smart Taskbar and click Refresh.
Not that big of a deal...I'm just thrilled that UltraMon works as well as it does in Vista. I'm eager to give the Beta 3 a whirl when it's available.
Best regards, Matt

I am running Ultramon 2.7.1 on Vista and having Smart Taskbar enabled appears to send Explorer.exe on 100% CPU usage spikes. Killing the UltramonTaskbar process appears to fix this. I will investigate this further, but for now this appears to be the cause.
|
DarkLordofIT 2007-02-12 06:07
The most common cause of an Explorer.exe spike I've found is a mix of 64 bit and 32 bit applications, when running Vista 64 bit edition. For example, if an explorer window and an Internet Explorer 32 bit window are both open Explorer.exe spikes to max processing for 5-60 seconds. I've also seen this with Media Player and other 32 bit applications.
I suspect Ultramon causes this phenomena occasionally as well, but in the end it appears to be a problem with Explorer, not Ultramon itself as other Microsoft products included with Vista cause this same problem. FYI, Windows XP 64 bit was plagued with the same issues.

koppah 2007-02-13 15:07
Problem is I'm running 32-bit Vista... Every since I disabled the secondary taskbar, Explorer isn't spiking.
|
Kevin 2007-02-15 01:58
I also have the spiking explorer.exe issue in Vista x86. For now I have turned off Ultramon until a resoultion can be found.
Vista is running great again.

I am having real issues with the smart taskbar not showing the correct apps on the correct screen. Lotus Notes, maxthon etc. If I do a refresh it sorts it out no problem. Is there any way to automate the refresh so it happens every couple of seconds?
There seems to be no formal acknoledgement of this issue, its not in th e list of Ultramon Vista compatibility problems for example, so I would just like to check whether its a configuration error at my end, or is it a common problem that we are all seeing?

Tony 2007-03-22 05:01
I'm having the same problem with the taskbar buttons showing on the wrong monitor (in Vista). Sometimes, a taskbar button will stay on the Ultramon taskbar even after I've closed the window.
Also (and I had this problem with Ultramon on Windows XP, too), when docking into my two-monitor setup Ultramon frequently gets the order of the monitors incorrect--like the left monitor will appear on the right. I have profiles setup, and I'll assign the profile, but it won't fix the problem. I always need to manually open the Display properties and re-arrange the monitors.
Frustrating.
|
Christian Studer 2007-03-22 11:16
The taskbar works mostly fine for me, what I noticed occasionally, for example after resuming from standby, is that some tasks get added to the Windows taskbar, but also stay on the UltraMon taskbar.
Tony, are the monitor numbers switched when you dock the system? This might explain why the profile doesn't work.

Any idea of an actual date that the 3.0 beta will be out? I'm sick of Vista and not being able to run all the Ultramon features (not Ultramon's fault) just annoying that Vista is so non-compatible with this version (2.7.1) of Ultramon. Just a date would be great thanks!

Darren - I am not sure how patiently "we" are waiting. Looking around - it seems a lot of people are jumping up and down for it. :) I bet it will be a relief to get the beta out just so the "when is 3.0" questions cease.

We've been running on Vista. The Ultramon taskbar doesn't show up on all windows, but it works fine on things like Word.

You guys are obnoxious! I'm sure the 3.0 beta will arrive just as wizards do...Neither late nor early, but precisely when it means to. Cut the author of this great utility some slack. We are all waiting for that Vista support and verbally berating our only hope doesn't make things any better. Not to put Christian out of work here, but I was rather suprised that most of Ultramon's features didn't make it into Vista as standard functionality anyways. Keep up the good work!
|
Matt 2007-03-31 07:39
I second that. Seriously people, cut the guy some slack. Do you not know how much work it takes to develop a software program? Not only is he spending his time on version 3, but he's also quite active with support issues here in the forums, among other things. He's doing considerably more than I can say about most developers.
Keep up the good work Chris.
|
Dubinvero 2007-03-31 10:54
While I agree that we should give Christian some slack in releasing Beta 3.0, I do think a request for a brief status update is reasonable.
|
NiceGuy 2007-03-31 12:11
Yeah, pushing so much for the release doesn't help anyone and is frustrating. IMO it's all about choosing and communicating release dates.. and keeping them updated if problems show up: if you say "version x.x will be released for xx/xx/07" and don't release in time people will start asking and complaining, that's for sure.
|
benb 2007-03-31 15:51
Some of you miss the point. The issue is not whether it will be out tomorrow (it is true some people are obnoxious here) but rather it has been stated time and time again, as recently as this past week that the beta will be out this week.
So, the while people may be viewed as obnoxious, it has been fueled by the repeated statements of "this month" - that being March.
I, like others, completely understand if there is slippage; however, if a person states a timeframe being this month, does so repeatedly, and has done so as recently as within the past week - then that is what customers are told to expect. It is that simple.
Stop being apologists, while there is nothing wrong with delay, you cannot blame others for believing what they have been told to expect.
|
dot_Zen 2007-04-01 01:47

All those groans probably didn't help nor hender, but I'm sure we could all do without.
